... is this headset capable of outputting my 24/96 material unmolested?
Because that's what the computer is telling me here. Which would be a big surprise.
Question about
Am I doing something very wrong, or...
Logitech had to license the Dolby surround technology, and Dolby isn't going to redo what is almost certainly Dolby Digital (AC3) just for Logitech's convenience - so Logitech is probably packing a fairly standard AC3 capable DAC in there somewhere. I'm not aware of any DAC capable of supporting AC3 that can't also do 24/96 stereo. However, I'm hardly all knowing in these matters. In any event, Windows is just reporting that it is seeing a USB device (DAC) capable of 24/96.
As to unmolested . . . I suspect that the USB connection feeding the PCM/LPCM data stream is not of the highest caliber; but I'm sure your expectations were modest . . . hence your surprise. Yes?
If you wanted to experiment a little, try uninstalling the G35 drivers and see what you get. My guess is that Windows would still report seeing a a device capable of receiving 24/96 stereo; and you would probably get that with the right music player and "high res" FLAC/ALAC music files.
