Hi Veronica, I am Christopher from Pogoplug. Yes indeed, you can do this with Pogoplug. External drives attached to your Vista machine can be accessed from your MacBook Pro. Install Pogoplug software on both the Vista PC and the MacBook Pro using the same my.pogoplug.com email address. On your Vista PC, open Pogoplug Preferences, click the 'Remote Access' tab, and 'Add' the external drive. Now the Vista attached drive will appear in your MacBook Pro's Finder. Have you tried going through CMD+K in finder and connecting to the Vista machine via a SMB. I got a New Linksys router and the USB Drive connects to it via SMB (A Windows protocol) so even if it's formatted as NTFS Mac can still read+write as it's my time machine drive. Just make sure the Vista machine has the permissions set with remote access as that's a pain in the butt to setup. I'd imagine it would work the same way and I think the Pogoplug software would only have to be installed on the Vista PC as long as on Vista it's seen as a sort of external drive or volume.
