Question about
A good home wireless router with usb dongle
all reviews I read for this kind of item are half negative half positive, complains on dropped connection or unstable usb port, which is the most important, also I'm wondering if I would be able to connect my WD passport to the router as a network hard drive
If you have a Mac I would for sure suggest the AirPort Extreme. The fact of the matter is its one of the best wireless routers out there (although it is expensive). It has usb ports and I have set them up in homes with AirPort expresses to cover even larger areas. (House + detached studio. About 500 feet and 4 walls 2 of which were exterior. Full bars and full speed in the studio) That being said there are many great routers out there.
The ASUS RT-N56U scored extremely high, and for the money the D-Link DIR-655 didn't do too bad either.
Linksys has the Linksys E3200.
I have used the Belkin Share N300 and have mixed feelings about it. If you aren't on a budget I would opt for one of the other ones.
Hope this helps and starts to point you in the right direction. Bottom line if you have the money don't buy the cheapest router. Always expect %5 of the reviews to be 1 star. Those are the ones you should worry about, most of the time 1 star means user error. Worry about the 2 and 3 star reviews. That might mean actually problems. Look at the median more then the average. It gives you a better picture and ignores the outliers.
