3GS compatibility with 3G-compatible chargers/docks
What has been everyone's experience using the 3GS with existing third-party chargers/docks? I recently purchased a Griffin Simplifi, a pretty nice "universal dock" that also features a memory card reader and a USB hub. When I plug my 3GS into it, I get the "Charging is not supported with this accessory" message, and the phone does not charge. It does sync OK, though. The Simplifi charges my wife's iPhone 3G and my iPod Classic (6G) just fine. Also, the 3GS charges fine in an Apple-branded "iPhone 3G" dock. I spoke to Griffin and they claim that the Simplifi should work fine with the 3GS. Anyone else seeing problems like this?
I bought an external battery pack 3G/3GS compatible. It isn't working correctly all the time. It will charge if I connect the battery pack to the iPhone, put the charge lead in the pack. then I can remove the lead and it will continue to charge off the pack. A couple of times it has come up saying "..not supported with this accessory...".
Here's the fix to your problem........I got this from the apple discussion support forum. This fixed 2 issues I had with my 3GS: Battery drain and 3rd party chargers not working with the 3GS.
1. Go to Settings app on the iPhone > General > Scroll down to "Reset" and the select the top option to "Reset All Settings" This will reset the settings and reboot.
2. Now go into your iTunes folder - Home > Library > iTunes > iPhone Software Updates. and delete the 3.0 Firm Ware from the list.
3. Now plug your phone and connect to iTunes. Click restore and download a FRESH copy of the 3.0FW.
4. Once downloaded DO NOT restore from a back up. Set up as a new phone an once the restore is complete, manually add your data by syncing. Again do not use a back up during this process. Just act like you are starting from scratch. (contacts, music, etc.)

Thanks for the tip! So it turns out that for me, just doing step 1 of the procedure (Reset All Settings) was sufficient to solve my problem. After doing the reset, I decided what the heck, let me give it a shot, so I plugged the 3GS into the dock, and to my surprise, I got the little chirp, and sure enough, the phone started charging. Thanks again!
I tried this and it did not work for me. I have the 3GS and a Pioneer Premier DEH-P310UB. My issue is a little different. It usually will start charging the device, but after a bit will stop charging and act as though it is not plugged in at all , though the music still plays fine. When this happens the charging not supported message appears. The Pioneer is "Made for iPhone" and is advertised to work with the 3G.

i ghetto rigged my original iphone dock. just shaved down the edges and melted it away with a lighter and my 3g and now 3G S fight perfectly in it. LOL i know its a bit much but it only took 5 minutes and it works fine. i dont know why apple stopped including the dock with phone. they dont even give you a cloth anymore.
I think the OP may have resolved his problem, but I would like to add that I have the iPhone 3GS and the Griffin Simplifi dock and the Simplifi dock works fine with my iPhone 3GS to both charge and sync.
I have an ipod cable to connect to my car stereo . it worked fine with ipod 5th generation and 1st generation ipod touch. I get the "charging not supported" message when I plug in my 3GS (music playback is no problem). I can't wait to try the reset described above as I would love to be able to charge it in the car.
I also had an old ipod fire wire charger from the 4th generation ipod that I used with all other ipods. I haven't used it for the 3GS because I read somewhere it is not supported and not good for the 3GS longterm
Well, I regret to report that Reset All Settings turned out not to be a permanent fix to my problem with the Simplifi dock. Somehow, the situation has regressed back to the original state (I consistently get "charging not supported" when I plug the 3GS into the dock). I can only surmise that some setting I am making on the phone is indirectly causing the problem (pretty weird). I suppose I could try the Reset All again, or even the other steps suggested above. Though I really wish I could pin down the cause a little more precisely. Whatever it is, I'm thinking it must be the result of some latent bug in the iPhone firmware.
Just a note: I have the iPhone 3GS and the Griffin Simplifi and the dock DOES work with the 3GS.
The issue with the "charging not supported" message is also happening for me but the dock (simplifi) has been working for the past 2 weeks without a hitch so it is definitely an iPhone issue.
