Question about
2 x AirPort Extreme in repeater-mode over-the-air?
Right now we are using a dual-band airport express in our office. the airport express is connected to our broadband -WAN. now I'ld like to buy a second airport and use it as a "repeater". does the second router have to be wired to the first one with ethernet, or can airport express repeat "over-the-air"? thx!

You can do it over the air.
You'll want to look at page 43 in Apple's Airport Network Manual.

@edmondsjm is correct. Also, keep in mind that the Airport Express can be used as a wireless repeater as well (and is cheaper, but still supports simultaneous dual-band 802.11N). Only downside of that route, from what I understand, is that the antennae in the Extreme are more powerful.

Repeaters do not need to be wired to the network they're repeating. There is a selection in the Airport Utility to extend a network, that is the function you'll want to use.
I'd also recommend using the Extreme as your main base station and swapping the express to be your repeater since the extreme has a larger antenna and wider range. It's a fairly simple procedure that the airport utility and manual will walk you through.
