[This appeared in the gdgt weekly newsletter. Subscribe to the newsletter here: http://gdgt.com/newsletter/ ] I have to admit that I was taken off-guard by the news that Cisco was unceremoniously shutting down its Flip line of video cameras. I mean, I knew that Cisco CEO John Chambers sent out an internal email a few weeks ago indicating that some big changes were in the works in response to the company's drift over the past few years, but even so it's still relatively uncommon for a...

So I have my Flip mino HD that I got a while back. I love it's simplicity and the video quality is very good.
I just recently I bought a Sony Powershot TX5 camera, which also records HD video, but it also waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, etc. I'm about to go on a vacation to Cozumel, and I was trying to decided whether to bring both the Flip and the Powershot or just the Powershot. With proper lighting, this camera can give you some pretty crisp video. Hard to hold steady, but that's more my problem than the camera. Mic is very good.
Love the HDMI out, which makes for easy viewing. Also nice with the USB plug to get the H264 movie files off for backup. Zoom is sort of a joke, but not crazy bad. Overall, very happy with this purchase. $160 at Costco.

I am moving 3,500km on Apr 30 and am thinking of getting one of these to record the journey. But i am also considering the sony MHS-PM1 do do it. Opinions?
Optimally I hope the Flip Slide comes out before I go.
happy w/ mino HD?
how happy are you guys with the mino HD? i just got it a couple weeks ago ... i have a couple of minor complaints. 1. it feels like after sundown, this product is useless. i obv knew this when i bought the mino HD but it seems like i've missed out on a lot of things i wanted to record 2. i wish there was adjustable recording quality if possible. i understand simplicity is the key to this product but it would have seemed like a useful option to have. other than that, i'm quite satisfied....
