What is the best beginner DSLR with high image quality and possibly video?
details
I have a 900 ish budget and I'm looking for a good DSLR with good image quality and video capture. I don't care about size, weight, megapixels or any of that other stuff. Video is a secondary thing, I don't NEED it but it would be nice. I'd also like to be able to upgrade easily later. I've been looking at the Pentax K-r as a possibility but DP review seems to think the Canon 1000D would be a better choice. It doesn't have video, i know, but it is a good bit cheaper. Firmware Freakout

About 6 months ago, I couldn't turn on the *ist DL. About 4 months ago, it was magically revived. Now, it's acting all screwy. For example, in auto mode, if the flash pops up, it jumps into manual mode, and won't fire the flash. Has anyone run into any similar issues?

Image Quality
details
I have had this camera for two years now I think, and the Image quality is pretty good except for a halo of blur that I get around each image. It is only noticeable if you are looking for it really, but it has me concerned. Is it an imperfection in the lens or a problem with the sensor?
