The Panasonic Lumix DMC-3D1 offers true innovation that makes 3D photography and video shooting easy and intuitive. It's expensive, but you're paying for a lot of duplicated technology under the hood here. It looks good, it's fun to use, and it put in a good test performance overall.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-3D1 shoots good images and video in both 2D and 3D, but you can get better 2D shots, along with full HD video, from cheaper point-and-shoots. If you're really sold on 3D photography, and are prepared to spend close to $500 to get those stereo shots, the 3D1 will do the job. Just be prepared to buy a 3DTV as well, since you won't be able to view your photos in 3D on the DMC-3D1's 2D LCD. Otherwise, stick with a good 2D compact, like the gdgt-recommended Canon PowerShot S100, which is available for under $400.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-3D1 is not cheap, but it is clever. But strip away the fancy 3D gubbins, and image quality - while up there with Panasonic’s best 2D snapshots - is not match for what you might achieve spending between £400 and £450 elsewhere on another camera.
