Yesterday's news that six senior Enyo engineers had left HP to join Google fell like Rome in the webOS community. Enyo is the open-source application framework that HP's team is building in preparation for the launch of Open webOS later this year. It's clear that the biggest winner in the fall of Palm was Google. Importantly, they snagged the father of webOS, Matias Duarte. Nokia and Microsoft scored some top Palm staffers as well. HP, as we all know, squandered the rest of the company's efforts....

Just moments ago at an all-hands meeting, HP CEO Meg Whitman announced that the company will be open-sourcing webOS. Not just the Enyo app development framework — the actual underlying operating system! http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/2011/111209xa.html No hardware partners to announce right now, but this means any interested smartphone or tablet manufacturer can pick up webOS and run with it. I think this is a bold move and a great outcome; it would have been a real shame if they killed...

Its been 37 years since the graphical user interface was given the desktop metaphor. Since then things have barely changed. We've added widget, docks, gadgets, and "time machines" in the meantime, but computers are still stuck on this desk metaphor. My question is, if you could replace that metaphor with another, like Palm tried with "Deck fo cards" or Microsoft is now trying with the metro UI, what would it be? Personally I'm partial to the vending machine metaphor Apple is now leaning towards....

Here we go again! According to VentureBeat, Amazon is currently in negotiations with HP to snap up the former webOS Global Business Unit. http://venturebeat.com/2011/09/29/amazon-buy-palm/ I've always wondered if Amazon would be at all interested in webOS as they continue to ship their own devices — especially with former Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein serving on their board. I think Amazon has proven that they're quite capable of producing their own hardware, software, and ecosystem, so I'm not exactly...

For those of you who are still following all of the webOS news, I thought I'd share what I know about how things have been going at HP since the announcement, and shed some light on a few projects that never came to be. Some of the information below comes from friends who work in the webOS Global Business Unit, née Palm. I've always been enthused about the potential of webOS, so with HP ditching all of its plans for webOS hardware, I was eager to pry some more details out of these people. Some...

A few months ago Peter presented several scenarios regarding the future of WebOS. Among them was killing the platform, which I strongly believed would happen, though I wasn't expecting it this soon: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/hp-punts-on-webos-di... What are your thoughts on these news?
The first reviews of HP's TouchPad tablet are in and if I were Jon Rubenstein I'd be worried. The TouchPad was one the most anticipated devices of the year, but there was a palpable sense of disappointment in most of the reviews I read. Several noted a number of issues with the device, including relatively poor battery life, surprisingly buggy software, a relatively paltry selection of apps, and, to top it all off, that it's actually heavier and bulkier than just about every other rival device....

Android and webOS both use the Linux kernel, but they're not considered 'Linux', webOS isn't even open source. Is it the accessibility of the source code, the willingness of the vendor to include the word 'Linux' in the name of the product, or does it have to be based on GNU/Linux?
Is Tweed the best Twitter app with the best app with the best (and most fitting) interface? Best Google Reader app? Facebook Chat? I'm also a freak about icons, so that helps me. Just tell me your favorite apps! Thanks!
I don't think it's a defective battery, as I was using it the day before and didn't see any apparent degradation. Palm's devices have had serious issues with standby power discharge in the past, but I'm really not so sure I understand why this kind of thing is still a problem for them. Any other Pre / Pre Plus battery discharge tales?
running Symbian as they prepare to move to MeeGo. Now we'll get to see over the next few years how well they can compete and whether the market will be able to support all six of them. By the time all of these have actually debuted in the marketplace it will be four years since the announcement of the first iPhone, the initial catalyst of the modern smartphone era. What do you think? COMPANY: LEGACY > CURRENT Palm: Palm OS > webOS RIM: Blackberry > Blackberry 6.0 Microsoft: Windows...

I'm honestly surprised that so few people have challenged this story, especially given the source (Examiner.com, which I've never known to get a tech scoop about anything). For starters, the merger hasn't even closed yet and isn't expected to for at least a few more weeks, if not months (they said when the acquisition was announced that it should be completed by July 31st). Even under the best of circumstances it simply takes time to create new hardware, especially when...

The good thing about this is that it will make every other company try and (hopefully) undercut there price with more features. As much as I would like a win7 tablet a smartphone OS seems to work well for the most part. Android and WP7 tablets are going to be amazing. But what Im hoping for most is a WP7 tablet because with zune and xbox it would be killer.
Sad to see Palm's time as an independent company come to an end, but all in all probably the best chance for webOS to fulfill on its promise as a mobile platform. Very curious to see what HP ends up doing with it, esp. since buying Palm certainly addresses the gaping hole in their mobile strategy.
