Detailed review
As a Skype user, I always wondered why the service wasn't integrated into a mobile OS. I'm not talking about an app - especially one that couldn't be on at all time - where is the sense in that?
Nokia's N900 integrates Skype into the OS like no other device. But that's not the only thing that makes this phone a joy to use. Let's look at some of the items that makes this my ideal device:
* Web browser (Best in class, no doubt. Every site I've tested renders like my laptop. It is a joy to use and allows me to be very productive even when I'm on the subway.)
* Multitasking (Open website, then open your email. Isolate link or text in website, copy -- switch to email and paste. It's perfect! All this is happening while your game and music are active in the background.)
* Camera (5MP Zeiss affair)
* Address Book (I've wanted something like this address book for a long time. Just about the only field missing is 'blood type.')
* Divx/Xvid support (No more transcoding! - Right from utorrent to my N900)
I am writing this review based on the release firmware. I'm waiting for the first firmware update to hit -- this will apparently add the following:
* Ovi Store
* Portrait Mode
* Snappier performance
I am extremely happy with the phone as it is, so everything else will be a bonus.
Are there problems? Yes - the most glaring is the current state of Ovi Maps - which is horrendous! Sygic will be releasing an app soon which I plan on purchasing - until then I don't use any map features.
The email client could also use a kick in the ass - I hear that Nokia is working to beef it up.
Again, this is my ideal phone - it may not be the one for you.
