Notified about question on gadgets I don't follow, no way to flag terrible question?
details
Today, for the first time, I got an e-mail notification for a questions about a gadget I do not follow. When I followed its link, not only was the question a very generic "what's a good tablet", it wasn't even crossposted to any devices I follow (possibly updated after the e-mail went out?).
Now what bothered me most was that I did not see any obvious way to flag or downvote this question, which was demanding the kind of handholding that GDGT is designed to make unnecessary.
Did I miss something... Read more →

Nokia's Fear of Failure
details
Originally published in the gdgt newsletter, sign up at http://gdgt.com/newsletter/ As I'm sure you probably heard by now, last week Nokia’s board of directors took the long overdue step of replacing its CEO and installing Stephen Elop from Microsoft as the head of the company. Everyone had been talking for months about how outgoing CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo was in trouble, so this development wasn’t exactly shocking, but given how moribund Nokia’s been lately it also wouldn’t have... Well my phone stopped connecting to T-Mobile today, I was unable to recive phone calls and could not connect to data.
details
I call them (T-Mobile's customer service is awesome) and after trying out my G1 and that not working ether, they say its probably the SIM card. I'm going to a T-Mobile store soon to get a new one. Wish me luck guys! Has anybody heard of this happening before? Is it something about the N900 or the fact that the SIM has moved between phones? Because all that seems insane to me.

Today was a real eye-opener for the N900.
details
I juggled around two dozen Skype IM and SMS conversations, more individuals through emails and even more through live voice with a multi-party conference call placed through my central exchange and then routed to Skype... Simultaneously, from one handset - on the N900. That's an active conversation between ~40 individuals at one point, which I was managing entirely while hunched over one tiny handset. At first, I was actually wondering how I was going to handle this - then everyone's... Read more →

I am astonished.. Having tried but not owned an iPhone and Android (1.6) device prior getting the n900 i can say i choosed the correct phone for me.
details
It does everything i normally do on my computer and more. Even if it doesn't have a lot of apps the one's i need are there. I do not need 20 different flavors of the same program. I need one that do the job. The openess of the OS also makes the possibilities endless. It has the best web experience comparing the others and has a decent camera. I like the analogue keyboard and stylus. It makes better use of precious space on the screen and looks better. No need for big ugly buttons. The... Read more →

So I finally voted this as my main phone, i.e. the phone I'll be putting my main mobile number on.
details
Reasons being: Most stable and easily controllable comms stack in comparison to the other phones I'm using right now (Droid, iPhone, HD2), most usable as a general communicator (IM, Skype, SMS, etc), and least call drops / intelligible speech in marginal areas. The Skype integration is actually particularly good, and I find myself using Skype when out and about a lot more since I got the N900. I still feel though as a smartphone this lags well behind others in many respects. There are many... Read more →

Why Maemo isn't Nokia's WebOS?
details
Maemo 5, computer power in you pocket. At least that's what Nokia claims. Seeing the news hit this morning that the N900 is being dual booted got me to thinking. Maemo 5 was supposed to be the beginning of a new era in mobile platforms. Sure, every mobile OS now a days seems to throw around this monstrous claim, but I was, perhaps overly, optimistic about Maemo 5. Looking at where the N900 is now though I can't say that it has left much of an impression on anyone. Even the gadget... Read more →
