Nokia may crown it the most innovative smartphone, and alongside embedded wireless charging, there's plenty here to demonstrate that. But, for all that Windows Phone 8 does right (superb maps, zippy browser, simplicity), those holes in the app selection remain something that needs to be plugged.

The Nokia Lumia 920 isn't a groundbreaking, game-changing device, it's a refreshed Lumia 900 with a newer operating system and some additional power. That's not to say it's a bad phone, what Nokia has produced is a solid, well-built device which does the job you'd expect of a smartphone.

The Nokia Lumia 920 almost a barnstormer but is ultimately let down by a few too many niggling issues. Its optically stabilised camera does trounce the competition for night time shots but is let down by mediocre performance in good lighting.

Lacklustre camera aside, this is a superb Windows Phone 8 handset.

The design is unique and sharp, the performance has improved dramatically from earlier Windows Phones and the camera is amazing. Does that add up to an experience that outweighs the platform’s many limitations? For the majority of consumers, I don’t think it does.

When you mix in the phone's heft, poor battery life, and a lack-luster app selection, all of the positives don't make up for enough of the drawbacks.

Recent smartphones have placed more emphasis on their photographic capabilities, and the Nokia Lumia 920 is certainly a very capable performer in this regard, especially if you regularly shoot in low-light where most smartphones begin to struggle.

This is a fantastic phone for someone who is a dedicated Windows or Xbox user, or someone with a patient streak who spends most of their time on the web. Users who rely on a healthy app market may find that this is a great phone held back the limitations of its software.
