Detailed review
After years of shooting with my Nikon D80, I had become intimately familiar with the controls, feel, and consistent quality of that well-built camera. I was excited to upgrade to the D90, and it has exceeded my expectations in every area.
The menu has been revamped significantly, new menus added, including "My Menu," which enables you to build your own custom menu collection of frequently-used items. The layout of controls is identical to the D80, making it a breeze to transition to the new camera, and the controls themselves have a slightly more "polished" feel.
The picture quality is no doubt the most significant area of improvement — especially the low-light, high ISO performance. At ISO 3200, there is much, much less noise, and what little is there easily passes for "film grain," which is not displeasing to the eye.
While the ability to shoot HD video is nice, be prepared to either lock in a single focus point before shooting, or focus manually throughout the shot — which can provide some nice, theatrical effects. Once you've got it down, the video you'll produce on the D90 will be significantly better than video produced on low-end consumer HD video cameras, largely due to the optics and capabilities of the lenses (think shallow depth of field and low-light shooting).
All in all, I love this camera, and as a Pro/sumer, I'm sure the D90 will suit me just fine for years to come. If you're a D80 owner, I wouldn't think twice about upgrading to the D90. Highly recommended.
