What are the major technical differences between them? Sensor types? Which gives more freedom to control the actual shot? Best bang for the buck?

Hey there, just wondering if there's a way to set the D5000 to give files continuous file names? I like regularly copying my photos over to my computer to clear up space on the memory card, but every time I do this, it resets the file numbers, and now I have duplicate file names. Thanks in advance.
