Nikon’s D5000 sits above the D60 but below the D90 in the Nikon DSLR range, with a feature set culled from the latter, but priced towards the former. It has a 12.3MP CMOS sensor and a new tilt, turn, swivel 2.7-inch LCD and HD movie capability and it is, well, a cracker. quote

For the DSLR newcomer, we view the D5000 as a perfect device for those willing to pony up the $850 (kit) / $729 (body only), but only if you're honestly not planning on utilizing the video mode extensively.

If you’re choosing between the two current video-equipped SLRs in the sub-$1000 price category, we’d go with the Nikon D5000 if still image quality is your primary interest, and the Canon T1i if video quality is a high priority.

The D5000 may look like an entry level camera, but it really isn't. It performs generally well under most circumstances, but it let down by video quality. A small screen is frustrating as well. For the price, this camera is fantastic, but it has been succeeded by the far superior D5100.

When my 8 year old Canon 35mm SLR died (I know..), it was time for a new SLR for under $1000. Researched on all the websites (steves-digicams, dpreview), read through the over 1000 forum posts (yes) and it was down to the D5000 or the Canon T1 in my Budget range. When JandR had the promo for...

this is my first dSLR. Before I only had Lumix TZ3. I think D5000 is a world ahead of any P&S -- bigger sensor, more control, more ISO, less noise, MUCH faster focus. It's almost a no brainer if are willing to put up with increased size/weight of dSLR. most pro reviews rate it head-to-head...

This is IMHO one of Nikon's most underrated cameras. It sports the same sensor as Nikon's highly regarded D90. The camera is lighter and smaller, though you loose the ability to auto-focus with older AF lenses that don't contain a built-in auto-focus motor. This model is now discontinued; it's...

at least for me that I use it more as a hobby when I travel than for work, is the perfect camera, is as portable as you can go with a DSLR, it takes really nice pictures, and its really user friendly.
