Detailed review
The D40 is the perfect camera for a rookie photographer who wants to take their shooting form a point and shoot to a full blown DSLR. It's got loads of presets, which are great for the newbie, but full manual modes, with lots of tricks for the more experienced user.
The build quality is fantastic, so firm in your hand and yet is pretty small for DSLR. You'll find it really easy to just pick this up, take great photos and with some help, a newbie can figure out how to use the manual mode in mins.
The auto focus I find a little sluggish, but that's probably me picking out flaws. A lot of reviews say things are perfect, but this really is
I've yet to find another camera that can match the D40 for ease of use and great photos.
