I have had this camera for around 7 months, my first DSLR, so this review is going to be very 'unprofessional photographer' friendly, as I am an unprofessional photographer, who honestly after 7 months still has absolutely no idea what he is doing, but I'm still taking the best photos... I had not used a DSLR before, nor had I used a camera in manual mode. I had always been a fumble with the twist dial on my DSC-W100 and hope I did not miss the shot. I had known about apertures (ƒ/stops), ISO, picture compression, and a few other camera terms I had learned from a film student... Read the full review →
The D40 is the perfect camera for a rookie photographer who wants to take their shooting form a point and shoot to a full blown DSLR. It's got loads of presets, which are great for the newbie, but full manual modes, with lots of tricks for the more experienced user. The build quality is... Read the full review →
The Nikon D40 with the 18-55mm kit lens is one of the best entry-level DSLR's out on the market. This camera has the extra features that you want when stepping up from a point and shoot, plus the price is just right for getting started in the advanced amateur photography. I work in a photo lab... Read the full review →
I think this is a great camera to start with when you want to move from compact cams and want to explore the the world of DSLR. Selfexplaining and easy to understand the menus and settings, the camera wont take the the pic if it's not set up right (light, focus, shutterspeed), lightweight and... Read the full review →
Even though this camera was released a long time ago. It is still one of the best camera for its value. Ergonomic-wise, it is very comfortable when held in one hand. I also like the fact that the on/off button on the shutter button, convenience of turning the device on and off cannot be easier. It... Read the full review →
I love my D40. It has its limitations, but none of them are too great. This camera is fantastic. I've been shooting for a year now, and I have grown my lens "collection" from the kit 18-55 to include the 55-200VR, the amazing 35mmf/1.8 and a classic 50mmf/1.8E. Lens selection,... The D40 is perhaps one of Nikon's most important digital SLRs. It's certainly their smallest and lightest, their most affordable and ships with a fairly decent kit lens too. But noteworthy is the fact that it's their first digital SLR not to provide Auto Focus to their large range of lenses which do not have built-in AF motors.
The D40's auto focus system is old-fashioned. It's a backward step, which is something that DSLR manufacturers do at their peril these days. The D40's color is clearly tuned to the snapshot market, which likes eye-popping color, but our results indicate that Nikon went over the top in saturating the reds. The D40 offers plenty of in-camera image editing, but that's not a distinction that provides a significant advantage over other entry-level DSLRs.
