So, I took the leap towards DSLRs and got the D3100. I was happy with my Coolpix L110 bridge camera but wanted something a bit more professional. My experience with SLRs before the D3100 was the 80s Olympus OM10, making me completely new to the world of DSLRs. The L110 has a 15x optical zoom, which was fantastic. However, the quality of photos wasn't as fantastic, and I disliked the lack of control I had over what the camera thought was a good shot. While I'm waiting for power adapter to charge...

Okay, so I am looking to buy a camera for anywhere between $200-280. What do you guys think I should get? I was hoping to get something that could take really good pictures in the dark and when it was bright outside, something that could record in 1080p, something that could record audio very well along with video that had a good fps rate, something that had good zoom and megapixels and if ti had auto adjust that would be cool. Also if you guys could point out anything that is useful to have in...

Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase a mid-range to high-end DSLR, and I know absolutely nothing about the cameras, brands, or photography itself. Let me make this clear though, I will learn. I don't do anything halfway, so please don't be concerned about how advanced the devices may be, or how high the learning curve is. That said, what makes the difference when you folks purchase a camera? Are there reasons behind brand loyalties in this sector? How about lens ecosystems, how important are those?...

Which company makes best video camera and which model is best to start with? for example i know Nikon and Canon is best in Still Photography but what about video production?
Nikon made the mistake of posting an update to their Facebook account last night. A photographer is only as good as the equipment he uses, and a good lens is essential to taking good pictures! They've since apologized in a new post: We know some of you took offense to the last post, and we apologize, as it was not our aim to insult any of our friends. Our statement was meant to be interpreted that the right equipment can help you capture amazing images. We appreciate the passion you have for...

Earlier today, Nikon announced their new mirrorless camera system, part of the new Nikon 1 system. It's designed to compete with other portable cameras with interchangeable lenses (e.g., Micro Four Thirds). The specs:
10.1 megapixel CMOS sensors (new CX size: 13.2mm x 8.8mm) with 2.7x crop factor
10 frame per second photo capture
Video recording: 1080/30p, 720/60p, and a 1200fps mode (that captures at roughly 320 x 240 pixels)
3200 ISO maximum
3-inch LCD
For all the hype leading up to this...

I'll have to get my hands on one and see how it stacks up. This is exciting though. EDIT: I should add some more info. - f/1.8 compared to f/2.0 on the S95. - Both cameras go to ISO 3200. - P300 @ 12MP vs. S95 @ 10MP (eh, not happy with that -- usually more MP means more noise). - P300 has a "backside illumination sensor." Thanks to Apple and the iPhone 4, these are going to become all the rage.
It forces you to carefully compose your shots hopefully making you a better photographer. Very fast, sharp focus and pretty good in low light situations highly recommended for the price.
Set the camera on Manual, selected Bulb and used my ML-3 remote. It worked in the house but wouldn't work outside in the dark. Is the metering system over-riding my manual settings?
List of fixes are: - A magenta tint was present at the bottom of still images captured at high sensitivities after shooting in live view mode or recording movies for an extended length of time. The occurrence of this magenta tint has been reduced. - When images captured with continuous shooting in live view mode were played back, in some very rare cases, some of the images were not properly displayed. This issue has been resolved. - When shooting in live view mode with AF-area mode set to...

The COOLPIX P100 is part of the 'ultra-zoom' category, and it does not disappoint. Pros: The beautiful 4" LCD display On-camera editing options Full 1080p video capture Alternate, high-speed video capture option Cons: Auto-focus has been unreliable in low lighting Menu system is frustrating at times Digital viewfinder is disappointing.
A question for people familiar with this camera: Are all the normal white balance options (auto, incandescent, fluorescent, sun, custom, etc) available for use when one shoots video with this camera? I ask, because looking at a bunch of low light sample videos available on YouTube, it seems like no one has properly calibrated the white balance for their videos shot in poor lighting conditions. They all have a reddish or orangish hue to them that's really distracting. Any experience with...
Been looking for a new, slightly wider prime to use with my Nikon D300 that is wider than 50mm (since 50mm on a DX format camera is a little too tight for my tastes = 75mm equivalent on a full frame). Nikon has a nice 35mm f/1.8 (which is equiv. to ~52mm on a FF), but it's designed for a DX-only camera. Anyone played with a lens in this range? What do you think of it? Photo examples? Since I'm planning to eventually upgrade to a full frame camera at some point, I'm trying to make...

I'm going to Sweden and Iceland this summer. I own the Nikon AW100 and plan on using it for most of my pictures and videos by purchasing another battery and bringing extra memory cards. I'm curious if I should invest in something like a Canon T3i. I've never had a DSLR and the size and cost of the thing scare me for taking on a two week vacation. I've had other point and shoots, but I like the AW100 for the durability. My questions are: 1. How hard is it to learn how to use the thing? How durable...

I currently use an Olympus E-410 with three lenses and a flash unit. I do mostly air show and racing photography. I've recently been looking at the Canon EOS 60D and the Nikon D7000. Would it be a good idea to upgrade or should I stick with what I have?
I shoot some video with the Nikon D800 which outputs H.264 and I wanted to edit it in FCP. Tried to import it, drag it into both the browser and timeline, but it wouldn't take. Ironically the clip plays in Quicktime 7 player but in FCP I keep getting the "File Unknown" message. Any suggestions?
I am learning to use a Nikon D5100 & I cannot activate the HDR mode from the shooting menu. It says "HDR cannot be activated with the current settings or camera state". I'm using 18-55 & 55-200 lens.
Firstly, what may help your conclusion is what I'm coming from. I started off with a pair of poor 4MP Olympus point&shoot cameras, then I moved onto solely using my cellphone for photos as that was better than my cameras in every way other than zoom. Then I got the Nikon Coolpix L110, a bridge camera with 12.1MP, 15x zoom, and 720p video. So, I haven't had a DSLR before. I'm also a stickler for brand loyalty, so please don't go about suggesting a similar Canon, I'm not interested as I haven't...

I'm looking into getting my first DSLR and I'm trying to pick out which camera to go with. While features are nice, I don't need a surplus of camera features that I will never use. At this point, just enough features to take nice pics with, and to take advantage of what I do have.
Naturally, I'm looking at Nikon and Canon, but still am not sure which of those to go with. Any recommendations?
I've got a Nikon D40x currently from quite a number of years ago. Is it too outdated and should I start getting into photography by getting a new body first, or should I just get a few lenses to play around with first?
Hey guys, I'm looking to get a DSLR in the $600-700 price range for Christmas, and it's very important that it can take good 1080p videos. So now I don't know wether I should go for the Nikon D5100 or the Canon 600D. Of course shooting still images is also very important. Any recommendations?
So I walked into Best Buy all set to drop down some benjamins on a Nikon 3100; and the sales guy talked me right out of it... I want to make this into a serious hobby and he stared me clear from any beginner setup from BOTH Canon and Nikon. So... now i'm one confused shopper with a lot of research. Can you guys go down the list of the major difference on a high end DSLR like the Nikon D7000 and the the beginner setups from both top dogs, Canon and Nikon? Bare with my questions please. I know I...

People have very different opinions on what the best all around lens is for a DSLR. What do you think? What lens would you choose if you could only have one? For myself, I'd go with a 50mm prime (80mm prime when converted to full frame), or Canon's 24-105mm L lens that I wish I owned (http://gdgt.com/canon/ef/24-105mm/f4l-is-usm/). I like using fixed focal lengths because it takes more thought and effort to compose a shot. Obviously using a zoom gives you a lot of added flexibility but I get most...

So I've been mulling over this for some time. My NEX-5, which is my only interchangeable-lens camera at the moment, is decent. It takes some good pictures in my limited hands, although I'm left often wanting a viewfinder for the sort of picture-taking I do use it for. And to be honest, the vast majority of my picture-taking is done by my compact cameras. So the Sony comes out for 'proper pictures' - such as they are - and I've started to think that I can probably tolerate a bigger camera without...

I've narrowed my search for cameras down to the 550D or the D5100. I went through the reviews on DPReview and they both come very close to each other. They fit my needs and my budget perfectly so I'm ready to just order one of them. Before I do this though my last thing to check into is why someone might choose Nikon over Canon or the vice versa. For those of you who have used both or went through the same process why did you choose one over the other?
Engadget ( http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/21/nikon-unveils-v... ) has just dropped the story that Nikon has revealed two new mirrorless cameras, the V1 and J1. They look aimed more toward the amateur crowd in my opinion since they're only boasting 10MP sensors, and as Engagdet points out, an ISO limit of 3200. For that reason, I'll pass on these and wait for something a bit more high end. What do you think? Will you be getting one? UPDATE: As for...

I'm in the market for a new camera, which one would you get. The Panasonic GF3, Olympus E PL-3, or the Sony NEX-C3. I also considering waiting for the successor to the NEX-5 or for Canon & Nikon's future mirror less options. I want to buy the camera around September. What do you guys recommend?
