While its wide-open performance leaves a bit to be desired, it's hard not to commend this lens for its performance based solely on its price point. Stop it down to ƒ/2.8 and it provides excellent results; by ƒ/8, it's one of the sharpest lenses we've tested.

At medium aperture settings the resolution figures are exceptionally high and surely a benchmark to beat. Distortions are negligible and vignetting is very well controlled. The build quality of the lens is very decent and the AF performance leaves nothing to be desired.

The 50mm f/1.8 is cheap enough and the image quality is fantastic enough that it makes it the perfect lens for someone just getting into photography (and looking to build up their kit). For those with DX / crop factor cameras, the image can be a little tight since it's equivalent to a 75mm...

Probably the single best prime lens you can start with. For the price (~$150), you won't find any other lens that's as good, nor as versatile. I now have a 50mm f/1.4, but until then, this f/1.8 lens was my go-to for most occasions.
