- Ease of use Very easy use, in my opinion its easier than iOS and Android.
- Speed It is very fast and responsive making it faster than its competitiors
- Configurability Can personalize the home menu with colors and the placement and size of the live tiles, easily beating iOS but is not as good as Android.
- Ecosystem (apps, drivers, etc.) There are some big apps that are still missing like Spotify and Instagram but still has the most important apps. iOS and Android have more apps than WP8.
- Openness Compared to WP7 the limitations have been decreased a lot but still not as open as Android (which in my opinion is a good thing) and could still improve.
Detailed review
WP8 has greatly improved from WP7 being more open for developers and have finally allowed for better hardware (screen resolution, processor, SD card, etc.) making it a more attractive operating system for the smartphone market. Personally, WP8 is the best OS in terms of speed and Ease of use. Though, there is a very limited app market compared to Android and iOS even though Microsoft have worked hard to get more than 120,000 apps (Q4, 2012). In terms of personalization, they have added many colors to choose from, more than what was available in WP7, and the user is now able to choose the size of the apps on the home screen. The OS has definitely improved the openness compared to its predecessor, WP7, as developers are now able to do more with their apps and games.
As a person who has tried iOS, Android, and WP8, my favorite is definitely Windows Phone 8 as it is simple but yet very exciting. iOS is growing to be an old OS and is getting less and less innovative (in my opinion) and very closed for the common users unless they jailbreak their iPhone, which is not supported by Apple. Android is now the OS with the biggest app store (Play Store) beating App Store (iOS) in 2012, and also has the ultimate personalization but still uses too much processing power and can easily feel 'laggy' when using several apps at once, even though the processor used is very powerful. Whereas with WP8, the amount of processing power needed for the OS is very low and therefore feels extremely fast all the time. The Windows Phones that are out there supporting WP8 are also very innovative. This then comes to the conclusion that WP8 is my favorite operating system for smart phones.
