I saw the post this morning on Gizmodo and Engadget about the HP envy touchsmart 14 coming out this summer. Sources are saying that there will be a version with a 3200 by 1800 display. http://gizmodo.com/this-is-hps-take-on-the-retina-macbook-pro-509466199 This is over 4 times the pixels of one of my current laptops (at 1440 by 900) and it is crammed into a 14 inch screen, a touchscreen no less. I find this very impressive and may have to take a look at one. Again I am sure there will be the...

I am seeing a few reports that the upcoming Windows Blue update will merge Windows RT and Windows 8 ( http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/31039-windows-rt... ) Now although I am totally in favour of not having the segregation, will this not muddy the waters in deciding what devices to buy? When I look at store shelves, my thinking logic is like this: Windows RT on spec sheet -> must be arm processor -> not gonna have a lot of apps Now without that to distinguish,...

Okay! Here I go off about Windows 8! I bought my laptop in June and they said when I bought it that I would be able to Upgrade my laptop to Windows 8 for $14.99. so I did it. When Windows 8 came out everyone said that it's a great Operating System, so i decided to upgrade my laptop. When i first upgraded it was so annoying, because there is no start button, so i got so frustrated, but i was able to find a way to get a start button and then everything was getting much easier. One day my laptop...

I can hackintosh my PC but I just don't know is is good enough for me or not , Because the Speed of Win8 and the Metro are great ! Are the advantages more in this movement or the disadvantages ?
Since I've moved to Windows 8 I've been using my same old Windows 7 apps. I haven't been able to find a Metro app that really works for me, although I do occasionally pop into newsrob. I went through most of the store just after launch, any notable new releases since then?
The software reviews on gdgt are very limited: only desktop & mobile operating systems get reviewed and scored like any hardware gadget on the site. The more I browse the site, the more I feel it only focuses on hardware. There are lots of desktop software / applications that can be reviewed: ranging anywhere from security (anti-virus, etc.) to personalisation applications (like RocketDock and the likes). I also feel like many software reviewing sites are broken: they take money from the...

Inconsistent UI and jumping between Metro and Classic causes issues: In Windows 8, you get two different style of interfaces, (1) Metro (Win8 Style UI) and (2) Same old Legacy Desktop. When using OS it feels like two different Operating Systems running at the same time…wow! (You can say, you get 2 in the price of 1!). Because both Interfaces (Metro and Desktop) work differently, which makes it highly inconsistent user experience. Its an interface, where OS wants its users to learn and remember...

Does anyone have information about the windows 8 tablets (not RT) that will be coming in to the market in the next couple of months, if the screen will be suitable for outdoor use and readable in sunlight?
Is there going to be a GDGT app for windows 8/RT or a windows phone? I have no problem using the website but would be really cool to use an app for quick use especially on the phone.
http://media.gdgt.com/img/product/34/qbz/9fcn-460.jpg According to a new survey published by USA Today, "few [Windows users] have immediate plans to upgrade" to Windows 8. The newspaper says that the results of the survey, which was conducted by Antivirus software company Avast, "underscore lukewarm response to Windows 8." While there has been a lot of criticism of Windows 8 (including here on gdgt, where we gave the OS a "Wait to Buy" designation), is the situation necessarily as bleak for...

From the Microsoft press release: "In addition to the range of new Windows-based devices available, consumers can also upgrade their existing PCs. Through the end of January, consumers currently running PCs with Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 are qualified to download an upgrade to...

Remember the old days, when Linux was a nightmare to run on a laptop because half the hardware would not be supported and you would spend days in vain trying to make it work? While those times seemed like a thing of the past for a few years, my recent experience installing Linux on some laptops made me feel as if I had been time warped back to the Linux Dark Ages. It all started when I had to give my trusted Lenovo T61 to a student whose laptop had been damaged in a recent fire on campus. I had...

With the release of Windows 8 and its ecosystem of hardware near at hand, I have been thinking about the ancient (in technology years) myth of the all-purpose device. This myth is one every geek knows and dreams of. The idea of having a single device that you carry around that can meet all of the technology needs you have is one that has captured the imagination since the days of the first "portable" computers. For geeks everywhere, though, it is ultimately a dream that leaves us depressed and...

Confession. Reading this engadget post/reveal made me downright giddy. http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/31/samsung-Series%209-WQHD-Ultrabook-matte-display/ With Samsung producing LCD panels for Apple, I have always wondered why they were not doing so for themselves. There have been many theories and answers as to why, but it still didn't sit right with me. I figured that if someone was to challenge Apple in the display department, it would most likely be them. Now I suppose I should say I have...

http://media.gdgt.com/img/products/465/9zf3/9zf3-640.jpg Rumors are circulating today that the Microsoft Surface RT tablet will be going on sale for a MSRP of $199 this October. This puts it in direct competition with the other low-priced tablets like the Nexus 7, Kindle Fire and nookTablet. It also makes it one of the first mainstream 10-inch tablets to come in at such a low price. The Surface RT has the specs to compete with other budget tablets (check out a compare...

Microsoft, when they unveiled their tablets today, created an entirely new market, or rather, reinvented an old market. Now, they are in a position that could allow them to dominate the tablet space in a few short years. If you don't believe me, read on... Unlike rival tablets, such as the many Android variants, the BlackBerry PlayBook, which I think is an excellent tablet, but I digress; and others that compete with the iPad, Microsoft has the potential to bring to market a ready made success....

Just cranked this out, apologies for any typos. 1. Microsoft needs to know when to stop when it's naming stuff. Just call it the "Surface" and "Surface Pro" and be done with it. "Microsoft Surface for Windows RT" and "Microsoft Surface for Windows Pro" might be more descriptive, but it isn't sexy. (And I think Apple made a similar mistake with the "MacBook Pro with Retina display". Yes, it's accurate, but surely that was not the best they could come up with.) 2. It shows that the OEMs don't have...
