It's an OS you can use seamlessly on a tablet, but with features like Snap, Switcher and File Explorer you might well be more productive than you ever were on an iPad or Android slate. Just don't lose faith as you're climbing your way across that learning curve.

Conclusion: Wait to buy
Windows 8 marks Microsoft's attempt to reinvent the venerable operating system for the tablet era, with giant, touch-friendly tiles replacing traditional desktop icons, and full-screen apps taking the place of resizable windows. However, Microsoft has also retained the classic Windows desktop, and most programs designed for Windows XP, Vista or 7 will continue to run just as they always have. Certain basic Windows settings are also only accessible only from the desktop. This results in something of a schizophrenic user experience. If you're on a touchscreen device, such as a tablet or Windows 8 laptop, you may find yourself gravitating toward the tiled Windows 8 interface and apps, but you'll be forced back to the desktop any time you need to dig into the Windows file system or run Microsoft Word. … show more

A risk that Microsoft needed to take to try to remain relevant in today’s connected, mobile world. Only time will tell whether it’s the right risk at the right time.
Read the full review →Windows 8 is a bold innovation, melding the worlds of tablets and PCs. Its excellent touch input, an app store, and better performance are compelling, but the changes will be too drastic for some and as a completely new product, a few rough edges remain.
Read the full review →The operating system is fun to use right out of the box, and it doesn’t skimp on the key functionality you expect from the Windows brand ... expect something equal parts drastically new and comfortingly familiar.
Read the full review →With Windows 8, Microsoft is making a bet that it can please both tablet users and traditional computer users with a single OS. That bet didn't pay off for me. On a tablet I find it an excellent operating system. On a traditional computer, it doesn't work nearly so well.
Read the full review →This is the operating system that will come pre-installed on your PC for the foreseeable future. And that's a good thing! If you're thinking about upgrading, well, that means you actually care about this thing. And if you care about this thing, you should definitely give it a try.
Read the full review →Microsoft deserves credit for giving Windows a new, modern face. And the company will surely please existing users by maintaining the old one and the ability to run older apps. But the combination will require re-learning the most familiar computing system on the planet.
Read the full review →The integration of the two interfaces needs to be better. But Windows 8 works. It's one operating system that can support tablet and desktop apps side-by-side. And that might just be worth a little compromise.
Read the full review →Put TileWorld and its universe of new touch screen apps on tablets. Put Windows 8 on mouse-and-keyboard PCs. Presto: all the confusion would evaporate. And the good work Microsoft did on both of these individual operating systems would shine.
Read the full review →Windows RT is a strange beast. On the one hand, speed, security, and the best of Windows 8 make RT a pleasure to use. But app restrictions make Windows RT confusing, and the limited availability of apps undercuts the operating system's usefulness.
Read the full review →Windows 8 gives Microsoft a beautiful, responsive, and touch-friendly platform for tablets, but it works better on slates than the desktop.
Read the full review →Perhaps by Windows 10 we'll have another OS like 7, perfectly suited to most people's needs. As it stands, 8 is a bit more like Vista - there's nothing wrong with it, but it's probably slightly ahead of its time.
Read the full review →I know there has been a lot of controversy surrounding the extreme UI changes Microsoft has made in Windows 8, and indeed, those changes take Windows in an entirely different direction. As far as I’m concerned, however, the change in Windows 8 is only a good thing.
Read the full review →With its innovative 'tiles' approach, Microsoft's latest OS is a huge leap forward – although it may take some getting used to.
Read the full review →Keep an open mind, spend some time getting used to the charm bar and the Start screen. Once you do, we defy you not to be impressed by Windows 8.
Read the full review →So is Windows 8 worth upgrading to if you’re happy with Windows 7? Probably not. But then again, if you’re willing to put a little effort in there’s scant reason not to upgrade, either - especially as Microsoft has confirmed a superemely affordable upgrade price.
Read the full review →Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system is a triumph of engineering but it's not quite perfect and it will confuse new users.
Read the full review →It would be wrong to fear Windows 8 because of the sweeping changes (and poor follow-through) Microsoft has introduced into an otherwise fine desktop operating system.
Read the full review →The original review was based on one of the first dev builds. I've updated to reflect my impressions of the final product. While I did go ahead and buy the OS, I would still hesitate pay more than $40 for it, but at $40 it is cheap enough to play with. I have been using it fairly regularly as a...
Read the full review →Coming from Windows 7, this is a fantastic update for my crappy laptop. It runs smoothly, it looks great, and recognized almost everything out of the box (graphics excepting). Overall a great product, perhaps the best Redmond has ever released. I think it will be a great value once released. My...
Read the full review →Windows 8 is the most radical, risky, innovative and original re-imagining of the Windows franchise that Microsoft have ever done. They have taken every piece of the traditional Windows Operating System apart and put it back together in a very creative package. It runs so smoothly and well on all...
Read the full review →HATE HATE HATE Metro UI ... sorry... Windows 8 UI. With no option to boot to the desktop im forced to look at a completely useless screen for any productivity. The lack of Start button is just plain confusing and makes the user experience awkward.
Read the full review →I recently installed the Microsoft Windows 8 Developer Preview. It has been an amazing experience specially when I ran the Windows 7 System with it side-by-side. I have seen the difference of night and day. The Windows 8 is so much robust as well as less intensive on RAM / Graphics &...
Read the full review →Windows 8 is a pretty good OS. I found it easy to use and I feel that it integrates mobility more than OS X where it's just slapped in your face. I mean, I will have NO USE with notification center on a computer, and Microsoft knows that. I found it easier to use than Windows 7, although there is...
Read the full review →The overall feel of the operating system is great. I loved the whole "apps" deal with the new OS and how I can have apps that I would usually have on my phone or on my tablet right in my PC. It takes a while to get used to the new look and the way it works, but once you know where everything is...
Read the full review →this is pretty bad, i'm running it on few systems and nothing would work except for pre-installed apps. my printer won't even work, it's like VISTA all over again
Read the full review →It's a little harder to get used to, but its very smooth and runs very fast.
