Toshiba's Product Refresh: Design Hits & Misses
details
Toshiba announced a slew of refreshes and new products today. The Japanese manufacturer refreshed its entire line of mainstream Satellite laptops, ditched the clunky Thrive Android tablets in favor of a whole new line of thin Excite tablets, refreshed its Qosmio gaming laptop, and redesigned its LX series of all-in-one desktops. It's certainly been a busy day for both Toshiba, and the product team here at gdgt.
Let's take a closer look at each of these new designs though. The higher-grade... Read more →

Are you still using RSS feeds to get your news?
details
I used to live in Google Reader but more and more I'm finding myself never opening it up anymore. I've tried using Feedly or Flipboard and it does make it better but ultimately I always end up with hundreds of unread items a day to the point where I just mark everything as read ( yes I have cleaned up my feeds numerous times). I recently tried out Caffeinated to see if I could get back into using them but again the massive amount of news was always overwhelming so I would just mark everything as... Read more →

Windows 7 upgrade
details
I have a windows 7 disk and one code. Can I just buy a upgrade and get a new code or do I need to be running Windows XP to upgrade? Is this legal as I want it to work and I do not want to steal software anymore.
Can I just use my OEM disk and buy upgrades for the codes? I need more then one.

details
I have a class coming up starting January 5 I will need widows 7. I use a Mac and do not want to use 7 but most of the work will be done learning the lower levels of the Microsoft OS.
I have been planing to use VMware or Parallels. My Question is I don't want Window open all the time and I do not want to slow down my mac with windows in the background. I would like to have it open on a 2nd desk top using lion. Can I do this with out full integration just have Widows running on the side? How will... Read more →

Why do you think Apple has NOT added the ability to change your "theme" of iOS yet?
details
I'm about to write you all a book. Read it and love it, OR! just read the title, and answer.
Post brought to you by zfwp (http://zakkforchilli.wordpress.com)
iOS
As of right now, to change your "theme" or Graphical User Interface (GUI)—you have to jailbreak your iOS device and download another third-party application. Almost every phone / Mobile OS I've ever used and almost every phone / Mobile OS I've ever heard of, seen, studied—has had the ability to change the look and feel of your general,... Read more →

Microsoft goes to App-store only distribution for Metro. Why isn't everyone upset?
details
According to an engadget article, Microsoft has announced that they are going to an App-store only model for Metro style apps in Windows 8. This means that all Metro style apps will have to go through microsoft for approval, distribution, and (I believe a yet to be announced) cut of the profit.
In reading and responding to comments, it seems that there is a significant amount of confusion over what this means, and its impact. So I wanted to break down some key points here.
-- You don't need one... Read more →

Are there any good gmail clients for Windows 7?
details
I'm not talking about something like Prism, Chrome apps or the offline storage interface (which I think is extremely subpar). I'm talking about something like Sparrow for OS X. Preferably free, but if it's awesome I'm willing to shell out the cash. One thing I'd like to have is that it uses the gmail shortcuts, like Sparrow does.

How to restore from a hidden recovery partition
details
Just thought I'd document this, since I don't see any real information on the internet about how to go about doing this.
I'm planning on selling one of my computers, but I needed to restore it to factory settings. Unfortunately, I've done many things with my computer, installed various linux distros, running a clean install of Windows XP and Windows 7, but one of the things I never did was create recovery DVDs in case I have any issues or wanted to restore it.
Luckily for me, I kept the recovery... Read more →

Question of Openness
details
I have read the ratings and the reviews on Windows 7 openness. What is the definition? Can I only run certain software on it? What part of it is closed? Yes, I can't tweak a lot of the internals, but does that make an operating system closed?

Does Mac OS X require less powerful hardware to run smoothly than Windows 7?
details
When comparing MacBook's and PC laptops of about the same tier, the specs of the Mac seem to always be much lower. (For example - you'd be getting 4 GB of RAM whereas 8 GB is the norm for the tier of computer.) Is Apple just being cheap or does their OS actually require less beef to run properly (not talking about minimum requirements). In an "apples to apples" comparison (in this case Apple to PC), would a Mac run more smoothly than a PC of the same hardware?
