Rumors are showing up today that Microsoft is looking to release a new Kinect bundle next week at a subsidized price of $99. This will get you the Xbox 360 4GB + Kinect + 2 years of warranty + 2 years of Gold membership for $99 on a two year contract. There is reportedly some extra content but nothing has been specified yet as to what the content is. The caveat though is that there will be a $15/month charge which will also have an early termination fee attached to it. Oh yeah and for the time...

At Google IO I was somewhat shocked at by the amount and sophistication of the robotics on display.
The one thing I noticed was they all used the Kinect for visual input. It was kind of weird to see a MS product used in such a DIY way and wonder if they even thought of the things possible for it. With the SDK coming out soon, I am really tempted on tinkering with one. One idea I had was facial recognition door or garage door.

Seven thoughts on Microsoft buying Skype
[This appeared in the gdgt weekly newsletter. You can subscribe to it here: http://gdgt.com/newsletter/ ] 1. I have to confess that I had an inkling something was up when I suggested that Microsoft buy Skype in the newsletter a couple of weeks ago. I'd been hearing from some of my sources that the two companies were talking, I just didn't think it'd happen quite so quickly -- or even at all given the interest Skype was also getting from Google and Facebook (and probably some other...

My friend has it and the only thing I don't like about the Kinect is the fact that you need so much space in your living room to play it.
I understand why so much space is needed with all the jumping around we did, but it's just not possible for someone like myself to have 6-8 feet in front of my TV (which is not a flat screen). I guess I'll have to wait till I can afford a bigger place with a flat screen TV.

My in-laws got it for me+my wife for Christmas. It's a nice peripheral, but the quality of games seem to be left to party games.
I would love to see a fps tie in, or maybe an action game.

I have yet to purchase a Kinect for one main reason: no hardware based controller!
So, I developed one in hopes to drum up some attention to the needs of gamers. Project K can be seen here: http://projectkx.blogspot.com/2011/01/project-k-de... Check it out and let me know what you think!

Be very careful if you own an older XBOX. I had an XBOX 360 Arcade (with an added HD) that was fried by the Kinect software update.
MSFT support says it must have been a "coincidence" but judging by the news online, that seems highly unlikely. related: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12121999

Interesting Kinect hacks:
With the release of the Kinect and availability of open source drivers, hackers have quickly opened up the Kinect to see what sorts of cool things one can do with it. In the month or so since the Kinect has been released, there's been a number of interesting projects. Here are a few: Autonomous flying drone that uses the Kinect for obstacle avoidance: http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/06/kinect-hacks-dav... Autonomous driving robot using a Kinect sensor and a...

Kinect is selling 2X faster than iPad:
Microsoft released some pretty impressive figures today. The Kinect has sold 2.5 million units only 25 days after its release! For comparison, it took the iPad 60 days to hit that mark. Do you have a Kinect yet? Planning on getting one? Source: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/kinect_is_sel...

OK...so I'm trying to decide if I should get this for my 12 yr to play with us and his friends and family. He's got a fairly new XBox 360 (I suppose..
.got it last year for Christmas) and now that I'm reading up on this Kinect, it looks like the cord is only 9 feet long? Are you kidding me? And then you'd have to spend another $50.00 to get the "Official" USB extension cable just to get another 10 feet? Ridiculous!! Our home theater room has a projector/screen with all of the components (DVR, Receiver, Wii, XBox, PS3) in the rear of the room 25 feet away! Why in the world didn't these brainchildren ever consider that...

Anyone know if the Kinect can turn the Xbox on?
Probably far-fetched... but it would be damn cool if the Kinect remains in a standy mode, and if I walk into the room I can just say "Xbox On" and the thing turns on. Seems pointless, but for the times I don't play games, it'll be great to not have to hunt down the remote or get up to turn the thing on.

FOOLS WHO THINK THE SENSOR BAR WILL MERELY BE USED TOFLAIL AROUND IN GAMES, wrap your minds around this.
Many games will still focus pimarily on controllers, yet take advantage of kinect for boss battles, powerups, special moves, and lots of other awesome features/gestures. Bioshock 3... To use a plasmid, simply take your hand off the controller and throw a fireball. You get the point. Thoughts? Other ideas?

Alright so I am annoyed, all I have heard since the rumors of Kinects price point is that $150 is to much and that Move is the better deal.
Now this would be true by about $50 for one person but when you through in the second person the Kinect has it beaten. Now I like what Move will do for games that need a controller but it really is just an upgrade Wiimote and the games they showed at E3 only support this since they are almost identical to the wii games just with better graphics. Now the reason I love Kinect is for the fitness aspect and the potential in FPS and other games. Move and Wii can not tell you if you are doing an...
