The way I see it, this fragmentation - with allowing the OEMs to add their own little flavor to the vanilla Android OS (Blur for Motorola, Sense for HTC, etc.), it just delays all the phones from being instantly updated. That much is obvious. Microsoft did it right, just like Apple - they told the OEMs, essentially saying: "There will be no tweaking of the Windows Mobile OS. It will be deployed as is." This allows them to push out updates instantly to every phone out there at the same time,...

I have a windows 7 disk and one code. Can I just buy a upgrade and get a new code or do I need to be running Windows XP to upgrade? Is this legal as I want it to work and I do not want to steal software anymore. Can I just use my OEM disk and buy upgrades for the codes? I need more then one.
I have a class coming up starting January 5 I will need widows 7. I use a Mac and do not want to use 7 but most of the work will be done learning the lower levels of the Microsoft OS. I have been planing to use VMware or Parallels. My Question is I don't want Window open all the time and I do not want to slow down my mac with windows in the background. I would like to have it open on a 2nd desk top using lion. Can I do this with out full integration just have Widows running on the side? How will...

Talk of the next generation of home consoles is starting to appear on nearly every video game website. It got me thinking about what the price will be per game. With every generation, the prices of games have increased by $10. Now I don't know about everyone out there, but $59.99 is my limit and the game has to amazing for me to even consider purchasing it at that price. I do most of my shopping on Amazon.com and I wait for their video game sales. Yet I can't say that I feel confident that games...
As a loyal Zune Pass subscriber and a Zune 120 owner I was a little upset when Microsoft announced that they would no longer be producing Zune hardware. I understand why they are doing it they are way behind in the smartphone race, however I just don’t see why they would abandon music fans like this. No matter what you say until a Windows Phone 7 device has a battery that can last as long as a dedicated music player can those of us who listen to music a great deal and don’t want to be stuck...

I'm about to write you all a book. Read it and love it, OR! just read the title, and answer. Post brought to you by zfwp (http://zakkforchilli.wordpress.com) iOS As of right now, to change your "theme" or Graphical User Interface (GUI)—you have to jailbreak your iOS device and download another third-party application. Almost every phone / Mobile OS I've ever used and almost every phone / Mobile OS I've ever heard of, seen, studied—has had the ability to change the look and feel of your general,...

Nokia tried the whole gaming thing with the N-Gage and admittedly it was a huge failure though not enough to stop them from making a second generation. Also at its time mobile phone gaming just was not where it is today. They would benefit from the success that Xbox Live has. It would be a differentiator from the other Windows Phone 7 devices out there. They don’t have to worry about getting the games out there Microsoft is taking care of that. They know how to make amazing hardware they have...

According to an engadget article, Microsoft has announced that they are going to an App-store only model for Metro style apps in Windows 8. This means that all Metro style apps will have to go through microsoft for approval, distribution, and (I believe a yet to be announced) cut of the profit. In reading and responding to comments, it seems that there is a significant amount of confusion over what this means, and its impact. So I wanted to break down some key points here. -- You don't need one...

Sounds like tech companies are doing fairly well lately! For Microsoft, looks like Xbox has been the key to their continuing success. For Apple, it's been the iPhone and iPad. Have you bought any gear from these companies recently? More info: Apple: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2011/07/19Apple-Re... Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/investor/EarningsAndFinan...
In a recent gdgt blog post around the time of the AMD event in Seattle there was a mention that another gdgt event is being planned for the Seattle area later this summer. Has a date been already set?
Doesn't it seem dangerous for Microsoft to pursue an HTML5 strategy for Windows 8 Apps? First, I'll assume that they will run only in IE10, which will probably be backward compatible to Win7, eliminating a compelling reason to upgrade to Win8 in the first place. just run IE10 fullscreen. Second, if Windows developers begin to shift away from traditional Windows-native applications toward HTML5, doesn't that empower Chrome OS, iOS, Android, and even webOS at the same time (in fact, this whole...

This has not been Steve Ballmer's week. Well, it hasn't really been his half-decade, but it's really not been his week: first, long-time industry stalwart IBM takes Microsoft's place behind Apple as the second most valuable technology company, and now he's got the technoscenti and an increasing number of analysts ( http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/05/25/us-micro... ) and investors ( http://brooksreview.net/2011/05/ballmer/ ) calling for his head on a pike. I've long...

[Originally appeared in the gdgt newsletter. Sign up here: http://gdgt.com/newsletter/ ] Yes, I know I've been writing about Microsoft a lot lately, but the rumor going around this week that they might be buying Nokia is just too juicy to pass up. A couple of weeks ago, I'd made a few suggestions in the newsletter about some concrete things Microsoft could do to get ahead in mobile, and, while one has already happened (them buying Skype), I didn't suggest that they go out and buy Nokia, mainly...

The one thing I noticed was they all used the Kinect for visual input. It was kind of weird to see a MS product used in such a DIY way and wonder if they even thought of the things possible for it. With the SDK coming out soon, I am really tempted on tinkering with one. One idea I had was facial recognition door or garage door.
[This appeared in the gdgt weekly newsletter. You can subscribe to it here: http://gdgt.com/newsletter/ ] 1. I have to confess that I had an inkling something was up when I suggested that Microsoft buy Skype in the newsletter a couple of weeks ago. I'd been hearing from some of my sources that the two companies were talking, I just didn't think it'd happen quite so quickly -- or even at all given the interest Skype was also getting from Google and Facebook (and probably some other...

Since I have all three OS versions I have had time to test each in its own rights.(Disclaimer I do not have WP7 but a Zune HD) but WP7 isn't quite a major contender yet in the phone market and the Zune interface is where I think it shines the most. I think Android is definitely the best as a smartphone OS over IOS. My reasoning behind this is simple, notifications. The point of a phone is to be the always connected devices for emails/messages/calls. Androids has a huge advantage over IOS in...

While landing Nokia as a partner for Windows Phone a few months ago was a huge win for the platform, it's clear that Microsoft still has its work cut out for it if it wants to gain a solid foothold in the ultracompetitive world of mobile operating systems. There are plenty of things they can do to improve the OS itself and to better market it, but if they really want to win in mobile they need to accept that we live in a multiplatform world now. And it's not just that there are...

I'm looking into the top 10 SMB laptops, particularly those that balance mobility, performance, security and battery life. Features might include 12- to 17-inch display, fast processor, lots of storage, variety of connectivity options and built-in webcam. Though price is considered, I'm more interested in features, functionality and durability. What's your take?
My dad needs a new phone. He likes the ability of todays smartphones to be synced all the time but does not want to pay for a data plan. So I'm looking for a solution for him to sync his phone with the computer via USB and have a decent experience to check adresses and calendar on the phone. Email is not important to him as he is stationary on the computer for work. He is not the chatty type of person ;) I don't think the iPhone is the right thing for him as he does not want iTunes on his...

I'm building a computer for a local business I know but I'm not sure whether i should go for the Corsair CX430 which I actually have - or the CX500.
Here are the specs: Gigabyte H61M-S2-B3 Intel Core i3 2100 2 x 2GB of 1333Mhz RAM Western digital Caviar Blue 1TB 7200rpm - SATA 2 and a LG dvd drive - SATA 2
What do you guys think? Is 430 watts enough or should I go for 500??
My brother recently complained that he received an email from Microsoft informing him that his copy of Halo: Reach would stop working on September 21, and that as consolation, he would receive a code to download a free Games on Demand copy. Though he didn't say, it's most likely that he has one of the special free discs they gave out to some users to test a recent security update. The update issued on the 21st for Halo: Reach now makes it impossible for those users to get online with the disc....

My wife desperately needed a new computer to replace her 6 year-old desktop so, of course, I bought myself a new laptop and I'm giving her my old one. But try as I might, I cannot convince her to stop using Outlook Express. Of course, the laptop, which is running Win 7, does not even have Outlook Express so I at least convinced her that Windows Live Mail was the next best thing. Now, I need to figure out how to take the OE data in the desktop and bring it to Windows Live Mail in the laptop so...
We got a few OSX devices at work and as part of the process I want to use one as my main workstation for a couple weeks to really test the thing out. Luckily a lot of the services we use are web based and since I use Chrome on both platforms I know I'm ok. I will have to do a lot via RDP sessions to different servers. Should I just my VMWare View desktop for Windows related things or use VirtualBox/Fusion? I currently use two monitors at work can I get away with one due to Misson...

I'm trying to set up my work email in Mail on OSX Lion but I keep getting ActiveSync errors. Some brief searching reviled that Lion is only supporting Exchange 2007 or later now for the Mail application and even for Outlook/Entourage. Has anyone had any success with setting up Exchange 2003 ActiveSync on Lion?
I remember that the 'HTC Titan' had sounded super familiar...and here's why - http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?tit... 'Titan' is a pretty good name, however, so I don't blame them for wanting to use it again...and it's not likely that many people are still actively using a phone from 2007.
The specs on these devices are more in-line with products released in 2010. Considering that most new flagship Android phones are dual-core and have 1 GB of RAM, and that the iPhone 5 is likely to be on par with that, it's hard for me to get too excited about these new Windows Phone devices - they seem out of date before they've even arrived. I suppose it's debatable if one truly needs 1GB of RAM on a mobile phone...though I feel that having more is better; I doubt that future versions of any of...
Microsoft already showed off a lot of Windows 8 at CES earlier this year, but Microsoft says we'll be seeing a lot more of it at their BUILD conference in roughly 3 weeks. This got me thinking.. What are you excited for (and possibly not excited for) in Windows 8? Personally, I REALLY want to try out the new UI layer that 8 is showing off. It might be kind of weird to use on desktops and/or laptops, but it looks like it'd be amazing to use on tablets. This means that we could see actual, solid...

Posting this for a friend. She asks: What's the best laptop value for one with wireless, usbs, word processing, decent sized screen - the basics - for a good price? Frankly I'm just looking to replace my mom's 5 year old suuuper slow and annoying Dell Inspiron with something a bit more up to date and faster (got it to go faster after a virus scan, etc. but it's just older now). She uses it daily to surf, word process, view photos, etc. but I don't want to drop a chunk of change if I don't need...
This article by Jean-Louis Gassée (http://www.mondaynote.com/2011/08/21/hp-what-leo-... is probably the best article on the current happenings at HP. The idea that Jean-Louis throws out about Microsoft buying the Personal Systems Group that HP intends to spinoff sounds pretty good if MSFT can build a vertically integrated device & software company similar to Apple. With Nokia as a solid mobile phone partner and a thriving gaming platform in XBox, Microsoft...
It's amazing how much things can change in such a relatively short period of time. Back in 2006 the big players were Nokia, RIM, Microsoft (with Windows Mobile), and Palm. Now every single one is struggling. Also serves as a reminder that no matter how high Apple and Google are riding right now, it is still a volatile business and it's not hard to imagine two or three other companies emerging in the next five years to seriously challenge them (like Facebook, for instance).
If the other Android licensees no longer perceive that they will be treated fairly and openly by Google, will they explore other OS options? Everyone seems to think, yes, and they say Windows Phone 7 next, but what about webOS? I'd have to think HP's licensing terms might be better, with the imperative of growing the user base. Don't Samsung, LG, and most likely HTC, have to think about it - if for no other reason than to improve their bargaining position with Microsoft?
