As a Microsoft fan bordering on fanboy it is extremely depressing to look at what the company has done and imagine what they can do.
details
Zune HD is a wonderfully designed hardware proving they can make beautiful and functional hardware even as a software company. The Xbox 360 is a commercial success and while it does not show off their hardware chops thanks to some missteps (I am looking at you RROD) it still shows that Microsoft is still wonderful at software because one of the biggest reasons Xbox 360 tops other (in my opinion) is the easy to use and functional UI along with an excellent web experience in Xbox Live. The greatest gadget upset for me lately has been the death of the Microsoft Courier.
details
There have been so many products released lately that have piqued my interest, from the iPad to the EVO... but the iPad is just a biggie sized iTouch, and the EVO well when it comes down to it, it’s just another phone. The Courier WAS something new, it was something exciting. Through the rumor mill and the rampant speculation that is the Internet my interest and inherent excitement for the device skyrocketed. I have an iPhone, I love it, but the iPad just was not what I really wanted in a... Read more →

Ok, so that Microsoft event is just around the corner. The 12th if my memory holds.
details
I find it pretty crazy that Microsoft would be launching a new mobile OS right after WP7. And what it looks like (from the SanDisk leak) the Pink phones might be actually coming on Monday. So if they push this as a phone for the young hip kids, basically a Sidekick successor it might make sense. But it would only make sense if they were still pushing along the now completely dead Windows Mobile, though I guess they're still pushing it to make a cheap buck. Now that WP7 is out, it... The appeal of the Microsoft Courier concept
details
"Break it down for me." Concisely: form factor, ink, stylus, & function. Imaginary considerations: cost, productivity, intimacy, fashion, potential, etc. Undoubtedly, reasonable minds can differ, but this is my break down of the concept's appeal (I'll save the reality hurdles, problems, and market issue post for another time): Small Form Factor - Make no mistake, the Courier's svelte form factor is the real reason this product gets a second look. The device, folded, is... Read more →

So, what's cool about this?
details
I know, I know. I feel like I'm the crotchety old man of gdgt sometimes when I rag on certain gadgets. But for the Microsoft Courier, what do you find exciting about this? I just can't get excited. Like I've stated in other threads, I want to be excited about it (come on, I am a gadget dork!), but I can't find a reason to. Break it down for me!

The big question to me...
details
... after checking out the videos is: What does it actually do for anyone who isn't a pretentious creative type? I like the idea of the whole approach to the UI, but as shiny and lovely as I find it, I have a feeling many of the features shown comes across as those 'works really well in a demo and showing off to others, in real life not so much' things that traditionally Apple - not Microsoft - does so well. I'd definitely like to see more in terms of messaging / scheduling for...

Courier runs on the same OS as Zune HD, Pink, and WP7?
details
Reports from engadget are that the MS Courier will run the same underlying OS (Windows CE 6) as the Zune HD, Pink, and Windows Phone 7 Series. My suspicion has always been that Pink and WP7 Series are a lot more closely related than people may realize, but I wonder whether there will be cross-platform progs given that they are all running the same underlying OS.

Interface guide
details
Gizmodo has a gallery of what looks to be an interface guide posted now. http://gizmodo.com/5381011/microsoft-couriers-swip... Definitely liking that library view. I was a little concerned that the programs on there seemed to be way too focused on search, and not focused enough on an organizational setup within each notebook, but it seems with this view they've thought about that too. Unfortunately doesn't seem quite as well organized as OneNote...

Replacement?
details
So next fall I'm starting school again and I am wondering what people think about the possibility of the Courier to replace paper notebooks and maybe even buying huge and heavy books. When I heard about the Amazon Kindle App for computers, I thought that I may not need anything but the Courier to take to class. What does everyone else think about that? Is it just me or is that the coolest possibility ever?
