Microsoft is updating their Q&A as we speak, but based on reports from GiantBomb and WhatHiFi, it looks like they've gone back on most of the policies they had planned for the Xbox One, namely:
No more always-online requirement
No mandatory check-ins every 24 hours
Authentication will no longer be needed for game discs
You'll only need Internet when setting up the console
No restrictions on loaning or renting games
No more region locks
So basically, they're now matching PS4 shot-for-shot here, and...

http://media.gdgt.com/img/products/484/ae45/ae45-460.jpg Yesterday was not a great day for Microsoft. Their E3 presentation should have been a triumph, where they show off the shiny new games for their shiny new system and get people really excited for all the fancy new features. This is what the E3 conference is for. Instead, they found themselves competing for the public's attention against Apple's announcements at WWDC (with both presentations overlapping time slot-wise, and Apple talking iOS...

Today is the day that Microsoft unveils the new Xbox—it's been eight years since the Xbox 360 was unveiled to the public, a year before Nintendo and Sony unleashed their own seventh generation consoles. This time around Microsoft is actually last to the party, with Nintendo already having released the Wii U and Sony having done their own unveiling (well, not really) of the PlayStation 4. Last time the year-long head start may have really helped the Xbox gain dominance over its rivals, so what...

Remember the old days, when Linux was a nightmare to run on a laptop because half the hardware would not be supported and you would spend days in vain trying to make it work? While those times seemed like a thing of the past for a few years, my recent experience installing Linux on some laptops made me feel as if I had been time warped back to the Linux Dark Ages. It all started when I had to give my trusted Lenovo T61 to a student whose laptop had been damaged in a recent fire on campus. I had...

With the release of Windows 8 and its ecosystem of hardware near at hand, I have been thinking about the ancient (in technology years) myth of the all-purpose device. This myth is one every geek knows and dreams of. The idea of having a single device that you carry around that can meet all of the technology needs you have is one that has captured the imagination since the days of the first "portable" computers. For geeks everywhere, though, it is ultimately a dream that leaves us depressed and...

http://media.gdgt.com/img/products/469/a2bx/a2bx-640.jpg As we've just seen from IFA 2012, a lot of manufacturers will be rolling out touchscreen laptops (and a few desktops) in the coming months, including Dell, Sony, Samsung, HP, Lenovo and Acer. These new models will, of course, be tied to the launch of the touch-friendly Windows 8 operating system, and will also compete against Microsoft's own Surface tablets. While some of the new models will run the scaled-down Windows RT, and will be more...

Edit: Just wanted to point out that this is just a gag and not intended to be taken seriously. I saw some Microsoft-inspired logos and decided to make one for gdgt.

So I was all heartbroken because I got a new monitor for my Mac, and I had to buy all new software. I needed new versions of Photoshop and MS Office and Protools and Logic Pro. God, it set me back 5,000 dollars. But yanno, it's worth it because the Mac is better. Would you put up with that? Why do you put up with it on your tablet? What a lot of people don't understand about iOS is forcing apps to scale to certain resolutions is just lazy coding. That's why those of us that own Android tablets...

Microsoft, when they unveiled their tablets today, created an entirely new market, or rather, reinvented an old market. Now, they are in a position that could allow them to dominate the tablet space in a few short years. If you don't believe me, read on... Unlike rival tablets, such as the many Android variants, the BlackBerry PlayBook, which I think is an excellent tablet, but I digress; and others that compete with the iPad, Microsoft has the potential to bring to market a ready made success....

My 2 cent worth comment on the proposed conference is as follows: 1) Microsoft will display a Windows RT device made by one of its Hardware partners and launch its own version of the Microsoft store to sell multimedia content such as Books, Audio Books, and Movies on demand as is being done by Google, Apple and Amazon. The device would be a stripped down version more closer to the Amazon Kindle Fire rather than the iPAD They would also perhaps open their store for 3rd party Apps developers as...

Word is that Microsoft is planning to announce its own tablet at an event planned for next Monday. While plenty of companies recently announced Windows 8 tablets at Computex, Microsoft apparently feels it needs its own tablet to compete effectively against Apple. As All Things D puts it: Sources say that Microsoft concluded that it needs its own tablet, with the company designing both the hardware and software in an effort to better compete against Apple’s strengths. Microsoft’s tablets may...

Xbox: Entertainment Evolved is on now, starting at 12:30ET/9:30PT. Check out the livestreams at these sites: http://www.g4tv.com/e3-2012/press-conferences/Microsoft/131/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYvQu00t75w http://www.gametrailers.com/netstorage/e3/live.html What awaits us? Some of the stuff they've shown us:
Many households, organizations, and events have multiple Xbox 360s being used. Transferring content from one to the other frequently through Cloud Storage or flash drives can get repetitive. What if there were a NAS (Network attached storage) server that could store all the data used for all Xbox 360s on the local network? Things like profiles, game saves, movies, and even games and DLC could be installed on it. It would become the assigned device of the digital download licences. It would be...

Although I haven't looked at the numbers myself, hearsay indicates that the gaming industry is really in a slump--which is only offset by the repurposing of consoles as all-encompassing home entertainment devices. A good friend made a valid note which clarifies an argument that has never been clearly expressed by those attempting to make it: while mobile gaming isn't 1:1 competitive in quality and depth, it's scratching an itch that's never been satiated before. Such casual gaming is taking the...

I am a fan of xbox 360 and I had it at my cousins place. To be true i have just seen ps3 and really didnt played it much to judge. But I was sure that I am getting a Xbox one for myself. But after watching Xbox's and PS's E3 conference. I am really confused. I just want it for gaming purposes, also I have to mention this, that I am from India, where we dont socialise in gaming or get on online TV much. I was bound to order the Xbox but price, sharing these all stuff from Playstation really made...

I'm looking for a new tablet that can be useful for some word processing and viewing Microsoft Word documents, and came to a conclusion that a Wndows 8 tablet / hybrid is what I need, because it has full MS Word support. I was looking at the Surface from Microsoft itself, but I also need a 3G-capable device so I can use it anywhere. I don't live in a country that has 4G LTE networks, so that's not important for me. Is there any Windows 8 device with support for 3G connectivity? And if it has an...
Microsoft is offering a $40 upgrade for Windows 8. With that upgrade, is that an upgrade version that can only update an existing Windows install, or is it the same as a full version that (once burnt to a DVD) can be installed on a formatted drive?
Hi. I have an HP Touchsmart with Windows 7 preinstalled. But I also have a Dell Dimension 5150 upstairs I want to install Windows 7 on. Is their any way? Thanks.
Im just looking to get rid of my old 360 so I can buy the new one. It's in good condition, works perfectly fine, has all the cables and stuff. I'm hoping for at least $90-150
I need to partition my financial assets to buy one of these three products. I am currently using a Lumia 900. I do not have a tablet. I am also very fond of the literary arts and reading. Right now I am leaning towards the Kindle, although I may consider one of the other two. What do you think?
I got the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E420 recently. It operates at high speed, good! However, I found that I could not open my excel without activate the Microsoft Office 2010 installed on my laptop somehow. Do you know where and how to get the right product key for Microsoft Office 2010?
Is it usable?, I have Windows 7 installed on my MacBook but it is not my primary OS, but I still need to work for some school work. Should I install it?
Last week i have ordered a Kin Onem. I have bought it for using on Wi-Fi network or for Zune service like a Zune player. As you know it is a CDMA phone. So it is not supported in my country, therefore i won't be using it as phone. However i don't clearly know but i hope i will use it with my Zune account and Zune software any ideas? Additionally, i read many forums saying that i have to activate the phone from Verizone web site. Do i have to activate or unlock it to be able to use on Wi-Fi...
I'm interested to see what the overall feeling is in 2012 in regards to this. I have been a simultaneous Android and Blackberry/WP7 user over the years and I always prided myself in my Android loyalty and scoffed at those who claimed the open-ness of Google's OS hampered the overall user experience. Last month I received my first iPhone and I think I'm starting to pull a 180. I believe at this point, especially after experiencing iOS firsthand, Google should really consider pulling in the reigns...

I'm looking into the top 10 SMB laptops, particularly those that balance mobility, performance, security and battery life. Features might include 12- to 17-inch display, fast processor, lots of storage, variety of connectivity options and built-in webcam. Though price is considered, I'm more interested in features, functionality and durability. What's your take?
My dad needs a new phone. He likes the ability of todays smartphones to be synced all the time but does not want to pay for a data plan. So I'm looking for a solution for him to sync his phone with the computer via USB and have a decent experience to check adresses and calendar on the phone. Email is not important to him as he is stationary on the computer for work. He is not the chatty type of person ;) I don't think the iPhone is the right thing for him as he does not want iTunes on his...
