Detailed review
Lets get the most important thing out of the way: yes, the mechanical keys are magical. The tactile feedback from every keypress gives a measure of surety during typing that modern membrane keys simply can't match. This means that when you are typing you KNOW that you pressed that key. This may not sound like much, but it really matters when your typing out thousand word essays. The sheer brilliance of mechanical keys is too hard to fully explain, what should matter is that it is fundamentally better.
With typing out of the way, we can discuss the shell that surrounds it, after all the most fantastic keyboard in the world fails if it looks like a pimple on your desk. Happily, the DAS Keyboard passes. Its sleek black surface with matte keys means that its never out of place on any desk. The LED used for NUM, CAP and Scroll lock invisible when off and clear but unobtrusive when on. The only complaint I have is that it lacks a built in wrist rest like other high-end keyboard, but that is easily amended.
Build quality is perfect, the keyboard is strong and heavy ensuring that it will never slide across your desk. The location of the usb ports could be improved but is far from a deal breaker. The length of the the usb connector is generous ensuring that it can be used in any desk environment.
The biggest issue I have with it is that it is shiny finish tends to be a dust collector that is largely impossible to clean. This may be because i leave my windows open too much as dust gets on everything in my room, but it is particularly noticeable on the DAS, thankfully, it does nothing to detract from the user experience.
The fact that our interaction with the computer is largely directed through two gateways (mouse and keyboard) means that we should invest in those areas. However, i have seen fantastic Beasts of a machine marred by having cheap generic keyboards, it seems that while people are willing to invest in great monitors, speakers and cases; the keyboard, our main means of communicating with the world is constantly neglected. To those of you who understand its importance, know only the the DAS is one of the best.
