Detailed review
The UE Mobile Boombox sounds very good for its size and price. I've used both cheaper Bluetooth speakers (the HMDX Jam) and more expensive ones (including UE's full-size Boombox), and the Mobile Boombox strikes a very good balance of value and quality. It gets reasonably loud for a small speaker, has very little distortion at most typical listening volumes, and pairs easily with most tablets and smartphones. Battery life is good, and it uses a standard micro-USB port for charging. If you're looking for a good Bluetooth speaker for under $100, it's definitely worth considering.

Is it powerful enough to use to entertain a dinner party or a backyard gathering?

Probably not loud enough for a big backyard shindig, though it's fine for a picnic. For a dinner party, I'd say it all depends on how loud your guests are and how widely dispersed they are. If they're conversing at a reasonable volume, and are confined to a dining room, it's probably fine, especially since you don't want the music to drown out the conversation. I wouldn't recommend it for a party where the music needs to take center stage, though the full-size UE Boombox would work for that.
