Conclusion: We're mixed

Linksys adds support for the emerging 802.11ac standard with the EA6500, providing fast speeds, strong networking features, and an easy-to-use management console. PC Mag was so impressed with the EA6500’s management console they said it “raises the bar for router management.” TechRadar says the EA6500 “is way ahead of any of the other 802.11ac routers we've seen so far,” and that it “also managed a very strong performance with its 802.11n 5GHz and 2.4GHz speeds.” However, CNET did caution about the stability and range of the EA6500, saying “while the router's range is long, in my tests, it was finicky.”

The cloud as management console with Cisco Connect Cloud raises the bar for router management and that capability coupled with fine performance makes the EA6500 a four star Editors' Choice for wireless routers.

Although it's great-looking and offers lots of features, the Linksys EA6500 fails to impress because of the lack of quality assurance. For now it should be avoided.

With the possible exception of the iTunes server, however, most mainstream consumers won’t miss those advanced features and might favor the EA6500’s relative simplicity and ease of use.

The Cisco Linksys EA6500 is not only the best 802.11ac router on the market right now, but it's also the best 802.11n router on the market too ... all these positives come at the cost of a premium RRP, but if you have been looking to upgrade your router, the EA6500 is certainly the one to buy.

So far this is the only 802.11ac router we'd think about recommending, but even so, unless you're convinced of the need to future-proof yourself we'd hold off at least until laptop and desktop adaptors have made an appearance.

I have found with other first-generation draft 11ac routers that there is little reason to buy them if you are looking to improve the performance ... With the EA6500, however, you should see a noticeable wireless throughput boost, but only running uplink and only with very strong signals.

This beats the pants off my Time Capsule, even when it was running well. It's plays nice with everything that tries to connect, it doesn't drop connections, and it doesn't cause the modem to reset all the time. It has great features, some require a little more attention to details/careful...

I was recommended to get this router by a bestbuy employee and at first I thought that he's just making commission off it by selling me the most expensive router in stock but I decided to give it a try to replace my old belkin. This router has not disappointed me one bit. It was a breeze to set...

Disappointed with this router - so much so that I ended up selling it after a couple weeks of use. Cloud Connect feature has some promise, but not living up to potential right now. Biggest gripe is the inconsistent performance - downloads that would max out my bandwidth using my previous router...
