The X1 Carbon Touch is among the best Windows 8 Ultrabooks around, with a comfortable keyboard, fast performance and a lightweight build. Still, it's pricey, even for a high-end ultraportable.

The Carbon Touch takes everything that was good about the ThinkPad X1 Carbon -- including its fingerprint reader, durable shell, and excellent keyboard -- and adds a Windows 8-friendly touchscreen, making it a very good option for business travelers and the companies that sign off on their expense reports. Digital Trends says the Touch "retains almost everything that is good about the original while adding the touchscreen many people value in a Windows 8 machine," and calls it "one of the better Windows 8 touchscreen laptops we’ve tested." Laptop Mag also likes the Touch, saying it's a "strong and sleek Ultrabook that combines Windows 8 with a sharp touch screen." However, as with other Windows 8 laptops, battery life suffers, and Laptop points out that the Touch "lasts nearly 2 hours less on a charge than its non-touch Windows 7 cousin." That could disappoint some users, though Laptop says that anyone looking for a touchscreen Windows 8 Ultrabook "will like what this notebook has to offer."

We liked the original a lot, and this Touch version succeeds in bringing that up to date and into the Windows 8 space. Good job.
Read the full preview →It seems Lenovo has done it again with the ThinkPad Carbon X1 Touch, crafting a long lasting, skinny ultrabook. But we do wonder if the serious business crowd Lenovo often courts has any interest in the touch friendly frills of Windows 8.
