Conclusion: Pass on it

The IdeaPad Y480 is fast, which shouldn't be surprising, given that it packs one of Intel's new "Ivy Bridge" processors. However, that's not enough to make it worth considering, given the number of similarly powered laptops that will hit stores this year. And in other areas, the Y480 is a mixed bag. Its battery life is reasonable, though not outstanding; its keyboard doesn't live up to Lenovo's reputation for comfort; and at 5.1 pounds, it's a bit on the heavy side for a 14-inch laptop. Most significantly, although it has generally good graphics performance, its display is relatively low-resolution at 1366x768. Among other things, this means that, despite the availability of an optional Blu-ray drive, you won't be able to use it to display full 1080p HD video.

A wave of new Ivy Bridge laptops is about to descend upon the world, and as one of the first to cross our desk, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 impresses. It does its best to straddle the high-performance and all-purpose categories, and ultimately does a fine job juggling those two identities.

The IdeaPad Y480 gets you Lenovo's excellent construction quality and ergonomic design without having a "business" laptop, but some more configuration flexibility would be appreciated.

Like its predecessor, the Y480 looks good and has a solid build, but the world this laptop finds itself in has changed, as performance has received a heavy focus in the industry. Sure, the price is right, but comparison shoppers will likely find they can do significantly better.

The IdeaPad Y480 might not be the standout winner among 14-inch multimedia laptops, but overall performance, solid construction, and great speakers deliver a very nice user experience.

It’s a shame that Lenovo has made so many mistakes with this laptop because they also made the right call in many other areas. If you want a reasonably portable laptop that also has a lot of power at a low price you should still give the Y480 consideration.
