work at gdgt!

gdgt is hiring! We are a new breed of product-driven social platforms changing the way consumers share and acquire information about their products. gdgt leverages a robust structured product database connecting to people with products (and, in turn, one another).

We work in small, effective teams, iterating rapidly and maximizing impact on the millions of people using our product. We're well grounded, but our goals are lofty -- which is why we need bold, inspired, relentless people to help us achieve them.

gdgt is funded by some of the smartest investors in the business, including True Ventures, Spark Capital, and Betaworks. If you love gadgets and think you have what it takes, join us! Current positions include:

Systems operations lead - Full or part-time

If you love bending boxes to your will and watching web apps scale beyond reasonable expectations, we'd love to talk. We're looking for a system operations lead to help us keep availability crazy high and response times absurdly low.

You:

  • Love abusing MySQL, from optimization to replication to sharding -- the whole nine.
  • Know a thing or two about apps running on PHP 5.3, APC, memcached, etc. You can profile your way out of a paper bag (or super slow page).
  • Plenty of experience with Debian, Linux vserver, bash scripting, network architecture / load balancing, and VPNs.
  • Able to quickly and efficiently debug server issues, even if it involves using netstat... and it's 3:00AM.
  • Ability to put up with system monitoring/health tools like Cacti, Nagios, Ganglia, etc.
  • Experience with management tools like Chef, Puppet, mcollective, Capistrano, etc.

Familiarity with (or expertise in) MongoDB, cloud architecture, AWS, CDNs, Gearman, Sphinx, Cisco IOS, and C / C++ are all big pluses!

Position is full or part-time; SF / Bay area or remote / US-based; pay based on experience.

UI / UX designer - Full or part-time

We care deeply for great visual design. And we know just how much work it takes to really nail it. We believe that the way an interface looks and the way it functions are -- and should be -- deeply intertwined, which is why you should be able to follow through from concept to wireframes to visuals on unique, groundbreaking experiences that will be used by millions of people.

You:

  • Extremely strong visual designer. Good taste and keen aesthetic sensibility: Very important.
  • Have an innate understanding of UX and IA; obsessed with marrying delightful visual design and thoughtful, elegant usability.
  • Can wear many hats and execute concepts through various stages.
  • Know how to edit, and have minimalist tendencies. You're totally unafraid to challenge design assumptions -- especially your own.
  • Are obsessed with the web: designing for it, using it, everything about it. You should have a mastery of current web interaction design best practices, principles, and patterns, as well as an acute awareness of what is possible with current web technologies (from both a visual design and interaction design standpoint).
  • Will be working directly with product leaders and a crack team of kick ass engineers to execute your vision.
  • Can balance a data-driven design process with strong gut and experience-based decision making.
  • May have strong front-end development skills (HTML / CSS / JS / jQuery, etc.), which are a plus, but not required.

If you want to build stuff in Flash, can't tell the difference between Helvetica and Arial, don't understand what AJAX can do for you, or have no interest in personal technology, this probably isn't the right fit. But if it is, we'd love to see your portfolio!

Position is full or part-time; SF / Bay area; pay based on experience.

Core engineer - Full-time

We're looking for a strong technical leader ready to go all the way when it comes to building exciting new features and compelling experiences that will help gdgt redefine the online gadget space. You have a vision, but you know how to execute and get things done. When you zero in, you're more effective in one or two good hours than a lesser developer's all-nighter, which is why you get that working smarter > working harder. But you still do both.

You:

  • Feel right at home building core features in OO PHP5.
  • Write code so clean, fast, and elegant, you might just hang it on your mantle.
  • Have solid MySQL and relational db skills.
  • Know your JS, jQuery, memcached, APC, and JSON.
  • Love finding solutions to complex problems and putting them to work in a way that scales.
  • Are disciplined and efficient in your approach to architecture and stability.
  • Have absolutely no love of IE6.

Familiarity with Facebook Connect and Twitter OAuth is a plus, as is experience with C or C++.

Position is full-time; SF / Bay area or remote / US-based; salary based on experience.
