Detailed review
As I stated in the summary I left my iPhone and AT&T for Sprint and the Hero. I'll leave the networks out of this and keep it strictly to the phone. The hardware of the phone is of good build quality, it doesn't feel cheap but yet doesn't feel like a brick in your hand either. The buttons on the front face of the phone are responsive and I feel they are fairly tactile and easy to use without looking at them once you've handled the phone for a few days. Going from the iPhone single button interface to a multi-button one was a bit of a learning curve but one I saw the level of control offered by the menu button I was impressed. While the iPhone is a very simple elegant menu style and options the Android can be that way or a total mess as I made it initially. Through the mess and days of not quite understanding how it worked I came to really enjoy the options, flexibility and customization that was possible with this phone. You are able to control pretty much all aspects of this phone and really make it "yours" which is something I never thought I'd be into but having the option to have "my" shortcuts anywhere on the home screen have made using the phone more enjoyable. For example, I have shortcuts set up for the people I call the most which only save a couple taps of the screen but add to the custom feel.
The camera on the phone is also very handy and nice. Being able to take 5MP photos and short videos is something I've done much more of on my Hero than the iPhone. The photos are nice and the video is acceptable as long as you have enough light.
While the phone definitely has its shortcomings, although I'm not sure if they are really hardware related or possibly software since the OS is still fairly new, I'm excited about the announced update to 2.1 in the next couple months. Most of my complaints have to deal with multi-tasking and a bit of hanging every once in awhile and the new OS is supposed to help with that. This is definitely a phone I would recommend, and have done so to many of my friends and co-workers, if you like tinkering and exploring your gadgets this is a great option.
