Hah, I just left a product meeting with HP. Someone inevitably asked about the TouchPad and HP told us that, "we still sell a tablet. The HP Slate is still available, primarily to our business customers." I wonder how that's going? Have you used an HP Slate? Is there anything that differentiates it from the plethora of Windows tablets currently on the market?

Apple seems to have no fear of any upcoming tablets based on Tim Cook's comments yesterday.
I can't say I disagree with his comments in regards to Windows but I'm on the fence with the Android comments. On one hand he is correct, the next generation of Android tablets are technically non-existent until there is a price and date but to completely dismiss them is another. Although this was an earnings meeting so you want to say things to get people happy.

I'm reviewing the HP Slate 500 for my podcast/blog, so if anyone has any questions, anything I should pay special attention to while I have it, let me…
know!

Same or similar screen size as a first gen netbook with a netbook processor at more than twice the cost. OUCH!
I can't imagine running Windows 7 on this. Hopefully this is only a stop gap until HP does something with the Palm OS platform.

I am surprised at the lack of ingenuity from HP (who's says "Let's do Amazing" as their tagline).
In the age where iPad has defined the paradigm, HP is still hanging on to Windows OS, and styler pen which I thought was obsolete within few months after that was invented. If they can't use the PalmOS, anything they do will only sink their prospects. $800 for this crap (or a murder weapon) is rediculus, even if they think this is targeted towards enterprises.

Why HP bought Palm
Originally appeared in the gdgt newsletter: http://gdgt.com/newsletter/ The recent news about about HP finally launching their Slate 500 tablet got me thinking about the tablet we're all really waiting for them to introduce -- the PalmPad -- and why HP bought Palm in the first place. To me HP’s decision to buy Palm says a lot about where they think the future of the PC business is going and that after years of screwing around they are finally ready to get serious about mobile. HP knows...

I am excited! I have been waiting for a Window 7 slate to finally arrive. I currently use a HP TC1100 with Microsoft OneNote .... I live in OneNote.
I have years of notes, meetings, etc stored in OneNote. My TC1100 is getting really, really long in the tooth. And for $800 with an active digitizer --- I think this is a deal. I will be ordering one as soon as I can get $800 together.

And what do you know. It's actually official now at $799.

I work in IT at a pretty big company and today I saw the HP Slate in the flesh.
Basically, HP gave it to someone to play around with for a month, test it out, and give feedback. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to play with it myself, only got to see it turned off. But what my coworker was telling me that it's just not that great. Not very responsive, no where close to the iPad. Windows 7 is really holding it back. Really can't say if this means the HP Slate is still alive, but if it were to live on, they should probably consider WebOS instead.

Hasn't this been cancelled?
Just wondering why the text for this device doesn't say it will never be released. Is it being kept around because of the announced WebOS tablet? The two devices are far too different. This runs Windows7 on an Atom, and the other will be WebOS on probably either Snapdragon or ARM.

The ipad seems like a great multimedia device but like all other apple products it seems overpriced and somewhat gimped.
The good thing about this is that it will make every other company try and (hopefully) undercut there price with more features. As much as I would like a win7 tablet a smartphone OS seems to work well for the most part. Android and WP7 tablets are going to be amazing. But what Im hoping for most is a WP7 tablet because with zune and xbox it would be killer.

Here's another example of why Windows 7 is by far the best OS for a touch screen tablet:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuU1j9ZawIw That's Windows 7 Media Center running on a new HP Tablet. Lots of luck trying to do anything like that on a mobile OS.

I wonder why all these tablets that are windows based are disappearing? Wonder if there's a grander scheme to this.
I assume they'll have to make a better OS for it that is energy efficient and can give users rich experience.

well, it appears the HP slate is going to be canned..
i can't say that i'm too disappointed, but its never nice to see a product turn into vapourware http://techcrunch.com/2010/04/29/hewlett-packard-t... today is not a good day for tablets..

WebOS on the slate sounds like a good idea, but with a Win7 tablet and an android netbook it'll be interesting to see what other combos they come up with.
by aaron
So HP is buying Palm, and from the sound of the press release, they love webOS and plan on bringing it to new devices.
An HP Slate running webOS would be pretty interesting!

HP Slate Stats Announced...
I'm liking the 1080p playback with HDMI out and the SD card expansion, but I would have liked a higher-res screen. At least the aspect ratio is a lot closer to 16:9 than the iPad's, so the video experience should be better. They were really aggressive with the price as expected, with a starting price of $549. Ultimately this seems to be a really attractive device, what do you guys think?

The Slate seems really cool now that the iPad has been unveiled.
With the disappointment of the iPad, I imagine people will begin to realize how much cooler the Slate is.
