What possessed Google to implement MTP on Android? -.-
details
In case you don't know what I'm talking about: So plugging an Android device to a computer used to be like plugging in a flash disk, it just worked automatically as a normal drive. As of Android 3, they decided to use Media Transfer Protocol to identify the device the device as a phone.
What possessed those idiots to implement this horribly flawed protocol?! Plugging and Android to a Mac used to just work. Now you need to install an app that works 1 out of every 5 times you plug your phone in and... Read more →

My Nexus 7 was stolen, pretty sure I am SOL. Next steps?
details
Hey all,
So my girlfriend called me bawling this morning because it seems that someone stole my nexus 7 she was borrowing for a few days.
I am fairly confident its long gone, but I want to make sure I am secure, as my e-mail and stuff was logged in.
So how should I protect myself? I am rooting through my Google Account security page to revoke access to my email. I use 2 factor authentication whenever possible so I am reasonably safe. Anything else I should remember to do?
I guess I'll wait for the...

How to access a phone connected to a computer over the network?
details
As of Jelly Bean, Android devices connected to computer appear as a device rather than just a drive being connected to the computer. As a result, it's not a simple F:/ or something similar to access it. If it doesn't have a drive letter, you can't use the simple \\computer-name\drive-letter$ to access it over the network. Do you guys know any other way to access the phone over the network?

What is an Android? Is this a generic name for various types of tablets?
details
I purchased a Google Android, but find no documentation for it and have been unable to figure out how to use it for ANYTHING! It is a Coby MID tablet. Can't download anything. When I try to log on to Google, it spins and spins trying to find if my username, which I've had for years, is available and eventually says it is NOT. So where do I get info on how to make this little monster work?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Cross-platfrom plain text note taking software, does it exist?
details
What I'm looking for is something that can be used for note taking without formatting everything into rtf when working. Occasionally I'll type stuff up that may require me to insert a link into what I'm working on but when using software like Evernote or Justnotes it will auto format the link causing it to not properly copy over into whatever CMS I may be using. I know there are markdown editors like MultiMarkdown that work in plaintext but the problem is that it's OSX only, same with software... Read more →

Android "Refresh Interval" parallel to iPhone push notifications?
details
Upon downloading a couple of social networking apps on my Android phone, I was a little confused by the "Refresh Interval" settings in each app. On the iPhone, there was only "notifications: on" and "notifications: off" yet here, they're asking me whether I want to set it to "30 minutes, 1 hour, etc..." The more frequent intervals warn me that they'll impact the battery life but I don't want Facebook to notify me only every 4 hours either?
So here's my question - what is the parallel to these... Read more →

Benefits of Rooting a Nexus?
details
In the past, I rooted all the Android phones I've owned in order to flash CyanogenMod for a more "stock" experience and to overclock less capable hardware. I just bought the Nexus 4 today and was wondering if there were any significant advantages to rooting an already high performing device with stock Android. I'm not really looking to put on any themes or fancy customization of that sort, although a numeric battery indicator would be nice. If you're a Nexus owner, why do you root your device...

Can anyone tell me if the Nexus 4 is compatible with Beats by Dre headphones?
details
I know for some phones (such as my beloved BlackBerry 9780), the 3.5mm headphone jack is shaped in such a way that does not allow the Beats by Dre headphone port to fully connect into it...I'm wondering if my headphones will work with this phone or not, basically.

How is the Google Play Magazines user experience on a smartphone?
details
http://www.droiddog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Google-Play-magazines_0.jpg
I am a big fan of reading magazines, and now that Google Play Magazines is available in Canada, I have been using my Nexus 7 for this purpose. (I was previously using the Zinio app, and have been slowly migrating subscriptions over)
Now with my Nexus 7, I feel the magazine experience is pretty good (sometimes i need to zoom in still) and the text mode is generally helpful. Scrolling and loading seems to be reasonably... Read more →

Is anyone else experiencing problems the Galaxy Nexus not charging?
details
My GN thinks that it's charging when it's not and the screen turns on by itself also after a few seconds when I turn the screen off. Also, when my phone doesn't think it's charging when it's not, it sometimes doesn't charge when I plug it into the computer or a wall plug.
I have two batteries for my GN and the problems persists with both batteries. I thought it might have been water damage but my phone is dry and it's been going on for at least a month now. Lastly, this only seems to happen in... Read more →

Should I Stay (With Windows Phone) or should I Go (Back to Android)?
details
I'm a very simple person, Give me lots of memory(preferably expandable) and a huge screen. Simple right?
I have a Lumia 900, and I love what it does, and I love it for what it isn't, an iPhone or an Android phone. The 920 seems to be the Best Windows available from launch day, but with only a 4.5-inch HD display, and 32GB sealed with no expansion. This doesn't seem that much different from my 900; except the obvious WP8, camera, etc...
Sounds like Android is becoming more, and more what I want in... Read more →
