Back when I had the Nexus One on Eclair (2.1) I ran into the "Low on space" issue and it was slightly aggrivating.
details
I don't remember it being this bad though. I have 2.2 on my Dell Venue and it literaly freaks out anytime I install anything. I have 12.31/14.82 GB free on my sd card, and 53.66MB free in phone storage. I shouldn't be getting any alert what so ever. Sometimes unmounting and remounting the card works, other times I have to reboot. This is completely inexcusable however. I shouldn't be plagued by such an aggressive bug, and cross versions, cross devices. Google really needs to start... Read more →

What are the best root-only apps for Android?
details
I just rooted my Droid X and I'm looking for some cool apps to install to take advantage of this super user power. So far I've installed: - Wireless tether: Wifi tether to your phone. Pretty simple to use and you can even put encryption on. - screenshot: Take screenshots on your phone. It's insane how this isn't a native feature of Android.

I wanted to talk about Android and the direction it's going in.

I feel like there are both a lot of good and a lot of bad headed for the OS in the future, and I'm interested to see where things are headed. Here's what I think are the bad (note that most of the bad are just lingering problems that Google hasn't had the chance to fix yet, which itself might be the main problem): the first thing is the problem of advertising and marketing of their platform and phone. While the majority of Android phones in market at the moment are... Read more →

Anyone have game recommendations for Android besides Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja?

If you like tower defense games, you should definitely download Guns'n'Glory and HexDefense. Really fun to just pick up and play, also very challenging! I'm still digesting today's news -- and believe me, this is really, really big news -- but when I saw the announcement this morning it made me think…

of how way back in 2003/2004 I'd be in meetings with people from the Windows Mobile team at Microsoft where they'd promise that sooner or later Nokia would offer phones with their software on it. It was easy pretty easy to be skeptical then, but turns out they were right! I don't know whether this partnership will work, but having Nokia as an OEM will presumably give Windows Phone 7 the kind of scale that is attractive to developers, and as we all know a vibrant app library is a... What is the best Android phone to be buying now? (and by now, I mean right now - i.e.
details
not waiting for CES-announced handsets to be released, etc) I was supposed to buy one late last year to test some stuff out, but the whole thing went on the back burner. I'm now looking to get back into Android. Given the difficulty in getting a legit SIM-free WinPho7 here that I actually want, I'm going to let that stew on the burner for a while - and perhaps wait for the HTC 7 Pro to finally make its way to our shores. I like physical keyboards, which brings the Milestone 2 into... Read more →

Given the fact that manufacturers are using very similar hardware for both Android and Windows Phone 7 devices shouldn't it be possible to hack one of the…

OS's onto anothers' hardware. I am in no way a proficient enough developer to be aware of the complications inherent in this but it would be great to be able to swap my OS out on my Droid for WP7 much like I would do on a PC with a Linux build or Hackintosh. Any developers out there aware of any blatant issues with this kind of endeavor or should it be possible in theory?

Alright, how do you pronounce "Froyo"?
details
Steve Jobs' rant about Android during yesterday's earnings call has sparked a little discussion here at gdgt HQ about a particular thing he said -- chiefly, how one pronounces the word "froyo," which is the nickname of Android 2.2. He pronounced it as "froi-yo" while many others seem to pronounce it as "fro-yo." Where do you fall in this ideological battle?

If all the hardware for these smart phones is so similar, why do they make it so difficult to install an alternate OS? Yes, I know the answer is the carriers.
details
But at this point it needs to be as easy to wipe and replace the OS on a smart phone as an x86 computer. In fact, why doesn't Google try to make Android as compatible as possible with it's various competitor's hardware specs? I'm sure a bunch of people want an iPhone running Android. Or have it on some of the new WP7 devices. I do think increased consolidation is the path we're on. But I'm worried that superfluous firmware locks, etc. are going to cripple the cross...

SECURITY FLAW! Google Voice Actions usable on lock screen!
details
I just noticed today accidentally that you can press and hold the search button on the lock screen and perform anything Google Voice Actions is capable of. I am using a Droid 2 unrooted. This may affect the Droid X as well. This is a huge security flaw in Motorola's modified lock screen. Hopefully this thread garnishes enough attention so that this can be patched soon! Steps to reproduce: 1. Lock your screen 2. Press and hold the search button "magnifying glass" 3. Speak any voice... Read more →
