Why I Don't Use an Android Based Phone
details
Some History
I used to be an avid Palm fan when they came out with their first handheld and then their Treo. I eventually picked up a first generation iPhone after it had been out for about 8 months. I then went to a 3GS and now the 4S. I have tried Android based phones for short periods of time, say hours, not days, so I am by no means anywhere near an expert on Android based phones. I am also not writing this to try and get anybody to switch, only just to have a lively discussion.

I wanted to talk about Android and the direction it's going in.
details
I feel like there are both a lot of good and a lot of bad headed for the OS in the future, and I'm interested to see where things are headed. Here's what I think are the bad (note that most of the bad are just lingering problems that Google hasn't had the chance to fix yet, which itself might be the main problem): the first thing is the problem of advertising and marketing of their platform and phone. While the majority of Android phones in market at the moment are... Read more →

Anyone have game recommendations for Android besides Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja?

If you like tower defense games, you should definitely download Guns'n'Glory and HexDefense. Really fun to just pick up and play, also very challenging! How important is the 'Google experience' to Android nowadays?
details
The biggest complaint I've heard from people regarding Android is the custom skins that add no compelling features, and the biggest argument for Android is it's integration with the Google cloud, however large parts of the cloud are actually inaccessible from Android in it's current state without the aid of third party apps form the Marketplace. HTC's latest version of sense is proof enough that the custom skins the handset manufacturers place on their Android phones... Read more →

This is awesome, Google says that you'll finally be able to edit Google Docs on Android devices and the iPad:
details
"today we demonstrated new mobile editing capabilities for Google Docs on the Android platform and the iPad. In the next few weeks, co-workers around the world will soon be able to co-edit files simultaneously from an even wider array of devices." http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/09/three-milli...

Share your custom Android design!
details
The best thing about having an Android phone is that you can create your own custom phone experience. Here are some screenshots of mine: http://android.musketeer.mm.st/ I'm using an Australian Samsung Galaxy S running the stock Optus firmware and Launcher Pro Plus with Beautiful Widgets. This lets me pinch to zoom out to thumbnails of my 7 home screens, then tap to jump directly to any of them. Essentially it has let me build build my own custom version of something like HTC's Sense UI... Read more →

Droid X vs.
details
iPhone 4 video: UI response / speed comparison Yesterday, I was playing around with the latest in Android hotness here at the gdgt office. The Motorola Droid X is a beast of a phone, but it's quite beautiful (I actually prefer it to the HTC EVO 4G). Anyway, while playing around with it, I was reminded of some things that really bug me when it comes to Android. The interface is noticeably slower (at least on this device, running Android 2.1) than my iPhone 4. What do I mean? I filmed a video... Read more →

The iPhone 4 was my first smartphone.
details
While it was nice, by the time I got it, I already wanted to switch to Android to support the more open-source, free market alternative. After a few weeks of battling Apple's restrictions on a gadget that I already bought and own, I decided to jump ship and switch to the Captivate (the AT&T Galaxy S phone). So far, I love it. Compared with the iPhone, the interface isn't quite as crisp or polished, but it makes up for that in sheer customization potential. Plus, I don't feel...

Power Strip is such an awesome app, and for $0.99 it is well worth the price since it is on sale.
details
Basically it gives you an iOS type pop up for recent applications, all applications, shortcuts and widgets. It is basically a launcher that sits on top of your normal launcher. You can set it up anyway you want but I have it so one home click pops up Power Strip and a second home clips takes you back to your defaulted launcher. I definetly suggest trying it out and seeing how you like it. Here is the link to the app on appbrain http://www.appbrain.com/app/mobi.intuitit.android.... And... Read more →

Android wallpaper app, "My Little Pony" steals user info?
details
This is pretty horrific news! Apparently, a popular wallpaper app in the Android marketplace has been sending various bits of user data to servers in China. This data includes "SIM card numbers, text messages, browsing history, and voicemail passwords." It's been downloaded somewhere between 1 million and 4.6 million times (the marketplace apparently doesn't provide a reliable way to track downloads at the moment). Anyway, more info here:...
