How important is the 'Google experience' to Android nowadays?
details
The biggest complaint I've heard from people regarding Android is the custom skins that add no compelling features, and the biggest argument for Android is it's integration with the Google cloud, however large parts of the cloud are actually inaccessible from Android in it's current state without the aid of third party apps form the Marketplace. HTC's latest version of sense is proof enough that the custom skins the handset manufacturers place on their Android phones... Read more →

Who's best with the updates? Still a ways before the good Android tablets start to hit.
details
Presently, I'm torn between the Samsung Galaxy, and Notion Ink Adam. Although I could end up getting the WeTab or even HP's WebOS device. But I'm expecting most of these to ship with 2.1, with an upgrade to 2.2 and then maybe Gingerbread. After all, I'm still waiting for 2.2 to pushed to my TMobile Nexus One. So who currently seems to be the best manufacturer to get updates out? 1.5 to 1.6 (to 2.0) to 2.1 to 2.2. We need to reward these companies, so the other ones will... Read more →

When I heard that Twitter for Android was now out, I was excited to find out what a first party client would bring to the party. http://blog.twitter.com/2010/04/twitter-for-androi... However, it turns out that you have to have version 2.1 in order to even find it in the marketplace - I tried scanning the QR code and got nothing. This comes hot on the heals on the latest delay of the 2.1 upgrade for the Hero until June at the earliest, which is just the latest in a string of... Read more →

Skyfire is now available in the market And after using it to play some flash videos I must say it does it moderately well.
details
Skyfire is now available in the market http://techcrunch.com/2010/04/29/skyfire-2-0-for-a... And after using it to play some flash videos I must say it does it moderately well. Granted it is not nearly as stable as it could be there is still some choppiness in video playback but I expected that since it is being transcoded by Skyfire. All in all it is a pretty nifty little Browser for Android much better then Steel was. Honestly makes me want to mess with Fennec even more...

Using Android with no data plan?
details
As a boring geek dad, I have no actual need for a data plan- voice + wifi is enough for my needs. I'd like to jump on the Android bandwagon, but I'd like to make sure that I don't hit any unexpected bumps if I do so. Do Android phones save a copy of data locally and just sync with the cloud? If I have to reset when out of wifi range, will I lose e.g. my contacts until I can re-sync? Does it depend on whether the device is a "with Google" device or not? Can I completely... Read more →

GDE out for Android
details
Well I don't plug android apps but honestly I was blown away to see that there is now a home replacment app in the market that gives you Gnome desktop like effects. Its called GDE the new home experience and it gives you effects like cube, fade, stretch, and a new way to browse apps. I wish i could give a screenshot but can not at the moment, but here is the dev page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=5... The app costs $3 dollars and change but it is entirely worth it in my... Read more →

Android 2.0
details
Could this be some screenshots from the next Android release, http://phandroid.com/2009/10/16/android-2-0-on-mot... it kinda coincides with the giant Eclair being dropped off at the Googleplex. Now it is hard to tell if its really 2.0 or something Motorola did, but it looks like it is stock and could very well be running on all our devices. Here is the list i have copied from Phandroid "# Native Microsoft Exchange support # Native Facebook support including contact... Read more →

Donut coming sooner then expected, and the G1 might see eclair
details
Well here is some good news, don't know if it is true or not but sounds like Tmo is about to start rolling out Donut aka 1.6 here at midnight or so the rumor goes, but i heard the same thing with cupcake, now to play the waiting game. On a lighter note though the whole memory issue with the G1 seems to be solved as Android and me reports the Donut update was only 60mb 10mb less then the cupcake update so not only will Donut fit but leaves room to grow. The android devs did a great job... Read more →
