Conclusion: We like it

Fuji's XF1 is the latest high-end compact camera to compete with the likes of Sony's RX100 and brings with it a 12-megapixel sensor, f/1.8 lens, manual controls, and what Photography Blog calls "beautiful retro design that can't fail to impress everyone that sees it." Photography Blog also says the camera's image quality is "markedly better than virtually all other compacts." However, the camera has some handling issues, including what CNET Asia calls a "fiddly lens mechanism." CNET Asia also cites the camera's "average low-light performance" as a downside. While it may not beat the RX100 (a gdgt Must-have camera), the XF1 is still, according to TechRadar, a camera for photographers "who like something a little bit more unusual than the standard run of the mill point and shoots."

The Fujifilm XF1 is a neat retro-look compact camera with sharp optics, but its light-gathering capability diminishes as you zoom.

The Fujifilm XF1 is one of the nicest-looking point-and-shoots available and it performs well, too. But its photos and features might not please some enthusiasts.

This is form over function. ... It certainly can take good pictures. But if you need to shoot a lot of photos quickly, and you want to take the most advantage of a little camera's capability, then this isn't the one for you.

... the decision to shift to a new lens means that maximum aperture suffers at the long end; the existing sensor has ongoing issues ... It's these points that hold it back from the kind of greatness and high calibre build that the initial X-series models brought in abundance.

The XF1 should appeal to trendy shutterbugs and photography enthusiasts with its classic design, bright F1.8 zoom optics and color-accurate images. However, the XF1's fiddly lens mechanism and average low-light performance may not suit everyone.

The Fujifilm XF1 is a compact and comprehensive expert-level camera. It can feel surprising to handle at first but it's actually been well-designed. Plus, image quality doesn't disappoint.

In terms of image quality, the camera can deliver some great shots, but it's marred a little by some of its handling quirks, which stop it being even better.

It has a wide range of features, highlights being the f/1.8 maximum aperture lens, panorama modes, advanced filters which all lead to the camera taking impressive, unique pictures.

So whereas the Fujifilm X10 got the combination of retro style and a photographer-friendly approach largely right, the new XF1 feels a bit less well-realised. Not to say that it's a bad camera ... but overall the Fujifilm XF1 doesn't have quite the same appeal as the rest of the range.

Beautiful camera, and very solid except for the lens barrel which seems a bit flimsy when extended. It can take fantastic photos, but I do find the camera quirky and sometimes prone to blowing exposure or giving you results you weren't expecting. It's a decent pocketable camera, and I bought it...
