So the UN is now recommencing that international trade organization require MicroUSB chargers stanard for cell phones
.
They made this move so that chargers are not thrown away with the upgrade to a new phone. They want to dramatically reduce the ewaste. Great idea and would make gadget life easier.
And now the BUT!!! The MicroUSB chargers are not interchangeable. I have DC and AC and chargers for my Motorola Adventure and another DC and AC charger for a Blackberry Pearl Flip. But they are not interchangeable. The blackberry adventure say not authorized charger. I can't use a MicroUSB cable with a AC USB or DC to USB power adapter. I can't use a MicroUSB cable with a Computer unless it runs windows XP and I load a special driver. (On work PC the driver install is disallowed by profile).
I don't understand the reasons for the lock out.
With the manufacturers locking out non original equipment chargers how will the standard help?
MicroUSB cell phone chargers are not an answer.
Acually the MicroUSB Connector must meet certain voltage and amperage guidelines to get UL listing. All US carriers require UL listings of their phones. The problem is the phone manufaturers place chips in the power adpters on the data lines so that the phone will only work with their over priced adapters for a single model.
Standardization of mobile phone chargers is the right move in the grand scheme of things. I personally have thrown out far too many obsolete and useless phone chargers in my years of usage. I am looking forward to the day I can be at a friends house, notice I need to charge my phone, and be able to use his charger without issue. The Green movement is big right now and this is just one small piece in the puzzle to help our society correct it's wasteful habits.
I thought that along with the charger standardization they were also requiring the phone manufacturers to use compatible female ports on the phones.
Also, you can't expect any data to necessarily be transferred and I WOULD expect incompatibility there. For charging though, I think they want all of the devices to be able to be charged by the new standard.
Part of the problem is in the adapters like you cant use some old iPod AC adapters to charge the iPhone and the iPod Touch. But I think now that the resolution is passed, most new adapters should work with any phone.
Also, why do you have a DC charger? For car use? They weren't trying to also cut out car chargers, just keep down the amount of overall chargers tossed out. I know that when I was in France for a year I used many different MicroUSB chargers for my phone from different brands and carriers and countries and everything worked fine. This was before that resolution was passed as well.
