How do you like to sort your gdgt lists?

We're looking to improve our gdgt list sorting techniques, and we're curious how you prefer to sort your gdgt lists (or not sort them at all, if that's what you like). Let us know!

I personally sort by importance or daily use level. Therefore, smartphone, desktop/laptop, etc go first. Then generally by category or maybe time had. The want list is obviously sorted by amount that I want the item! Lastly, the had list is sorted simply by date last had.

I like the 'most used' category and I see it working fairly well for most. For me it'd rapidly become a nightmare to manage.

Maybe just a simple tagging formula (work - school - home - fun - important) instead of categories. Just make it easy (like in the beta) to drag stuff around.

The one thing I like gdgt for is having a list of cool stuff as well as a list of cool stuff that I want not only for myself, but for other people (lets say Christmas time) that is ordered easily.

Category would be nice.

Also an AND - i.e. Category AND Date, Category AND alphabetical, etc.

I totally agree with this.

I keep my sorting on manual, then move the items I most frequently want to discuss toward the tops of the lists. So... maybe a "Most discussed" sorting option would be nice where it would keep things I have discussed at the top of the list... giving higher preference to discussions than answers given.

This sounds to me like a really good means of automatic sorting based on the relative importance of the device to each user.

This sounds perfect. Ryan Block must start on this ASAP!

Agree w. Falcon that some type of sorting by use level would be good. In its simplest form, it could allow us to rank by usage frequency or identify currently used items.

A little more complex, it could allow us to identify primary/current items in various ubiquitous categories, for example my current laptop, my current phone, my current TV, my current "other stuff," and so on.

Older stuff can then be ranked by date, with an option to rank by date purchased, date added to my gdgt list, or date introduced to the market (for a real sense of how old a product is).

I've sorted mine by most recently purchased. Makes the most sense to me.

I'm not sure I've got much of a need to sort it as I've only got 16 items on my 'have' list, and that's after adding everything I could think of. Categories (phones, consoles etc) would make the most sense but I'm sure the community can think of something a bit more creative than that.

like falcon, i'd like to sort by 'most used'. i was thinking of that the other day while using the beta.gdgt site.

Another vote for Falcon's idea. I tend to sort by most important or most used and then by category after the top devices.

One of the things that kinda irks me is the fact that some "gadgets" on here are not actual gadgets (like Android 2.1, Windows 7). I understand why it's in the list but I think differentiating them into categories will make it much better. For example, within the "Have" tab, have other tabs within it for "gadgets," "Operating Systems," etc.

Or better yet, seperate the "gadgets" tab into even more categories like "Cell Phones," "Tablets," etc.

Oh and being able to categorize by company will be nice too.

I sort by category first and then brand within that. On an overall level, I put things like computers and phones first and SD cards last.

I order manually, for example grouping consoles and their accessories together.

It'd be cool to be able to group things on our lists, i.e. "What's in my bag" or "What's in my living room".
