CONS: forget permissions (unless you use truecrypt on a file container). Also, *tons* of users are having problems with a high pitch noise coming from the power bricks. Tech Support promptly replaces the unit, but most users reports that new ones have the same problem. Yet, I'm loving it. Just hope I can solve the noise issue with power brick.
I saw the horror stories after I had ordered mine. Sure enough mine started to fail just before my warranty was up. I went through the troubleshooting steps on the site which seemed to work temporarily but it soon began disconnecting again. Which brings me to the absolute worst part about the Drobo. Before I kick my own ass when this thing dies, I decided to make the jump and get a drobo for extra protection. I know USB 3.0 is in the pipeline for all hardware products, but does anyone have an insight when this will happen and when it will hit the drobo line? Trying to see if I should buy now, or just hold out if it's within the next few months possibly a year.
Just swapped a 1TB for a 2TB, and after 2 hours, it says 181 hours remaining. It might speed up as the last time I did that it took nearly 3 days to finish.
Despite being glossy (not a fan), it looks really nice and it was dead simple to add/remove storage on the fly, all while data was being read from the other drives. Very cool. If I get a NAS device, this will (hopefully) be it.
planning to replace the drives one at a time over the next couple of years with drives that have 5 year warranties and bigger caches so it will be faster.
I am considering getting a Drobo for my iMac and plan on using the FW800 interface. Using this interface, is there a significant speed difference between the two?
Yes the Drobo family is a lovely piece of kit but how can Drobo justify the difference in features between the Drobo 2nd-gen and Drobo S? Currently the prices from the Drobo online store states that: Drobo 2nd-Gen - £265.91 Drobo S - £484.26 (Promo Price) The differences from what I have glanced at both spec sheets is the the Drobo S has an extra slot for another hard disk and eSATA connection. After having an bad experience of two new 2TB hard disks becoming faulty within 10 days of operation. It was time for me to look at the DAS/NAS product line to restore my sanity. So therefore I am looking at the Drobo new line up S and Pro units and the established Netgear ReadyNAS line (NV+ / NVX). What do you guys recommend as a good alternative to the Drobo if I want something a bit cheaper and with integrated networking? I really like the idea of flexible expansion as standard hard drives get cheaper and cheaper....
I own a 2nd gen Drobo. I have had it for 9 months or so and it has recently started freezing up - all the lights come on - the leds go solid red and I have to cycle the power to reboot it. Anyone else come across this? It's very very frustrating as I am rebooting at least once a day.
I'm looking for something around $400 or (MUCH preferably) less. Right now, I'm getting a Drobo S 2nd Gen for $400, without any drives. Is this really the best system I can get? Would I be better off just buying and configuring a Linux box? If anyone has any better suggestions, please sound off!

especially since i would like to access our photos, videos, music, and movies on both my wife's desktop and my laptop and will likely be replacing the media PC that was connected to my plasma until it died recently. What's the easiest (set up and use) product out there that will give me the biggest bang for my buck. Thanks.
iMac with Mac OS X 10.5.8, drobo dashboard 1.6.6, drobo 2nd gen connected via Firewire 800. I recently upgraded the drobo dashboard software to 1.6.6. Now everytime I wake up my iMac from sleep, drobo dashboard doesn't see the drobo being connected. OS X itself still recognize the drobo and can access it just fine. I have to quit and restart the drobo dashboard. Anybody have this issue? It's very annoying.
DroboShare automatic mounting seems to have been a bit spotty for a while now, but it looks like it's really, truly offline under Snow Leopard until a fix is released. Was trying to figure out why I couldn't get things mounted as usual, and came across this: http://support.datarobotics.com/app/answers/detail... Kind of sucky, especially considering how long Apple gave everyone during the beta period to get their stuff ready and working in SL. Fingers crossed for an expeditious fix!
