Zune HD2

Mary Jo Foley over at ZDnet has reported that a Zune HD2, iPod touch for Windows Phone 7 Series, is in the works. From what I've read an 800x480 WVGA screen and Tegra 2 seem likely.

Thoughts?

I'll be investing in a WP7 device, so I'm not too terribly upset about the HD2. I will be upset if they never add WPA Enterprise support though, as it seems like a very important feature that has been left out for months now

I'm kind of surprised any Zune HD owners would move to a HD2 considering Microsoft just left you out in the cold as far as apps go. The device is only 6 months old and they already have effectively EOL'ed it?! Damn!

Zune HD (and old Zunes for that matter) are still getting regular updates.

Apps are not important for a media player, and Microsoft always spoke of the Zune HD as a media player that can run a few apps, not as a PDA that plays music.

Anybody who bought a Zune for apps is a fool.

All the features that make the Zune HD great are still there, and still being supported and improved (there is a Spring update around the corner that will add the ability to playback AVI files, for example).

it's been confirmed by a Zune team member that the Zune HD will continue to get updates (yes, more apps and games!), including the spring update. one example of many he's posted: www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showpost.p...

I can't wait to pick one of these bad boys up! I'm not ready to switch away form the iPhone, but the Zune2 sounds awesome.

Castle crashers would be so fun to play on this device.

If the Zune HD 2 is meant to participate in the WP7 app ecosystem then I'd guess we're not getting any more apps for the current HD. This sucks. I'm actually considering ebaying my HD and going back to my brown 30 - funny, one of the big benefits of that move is that it has physical playback buttons! It's annoying to have to hit the media button or unlock the screen when I'm driving.

if they leave us zune hd early adopters in the cold then i wont buy another product from then again. they didn't even bother to make an inline remote for us or a player with no buttons for playback control.

sting much? it does balmer

Wait wait. You're going to be upset if they evolve the product into something better a YEAR after the first one came out?

I think you need to realize that buying any consumer electronic in this day and age is asking for it to be immediately put out of date. I might have been upset if they did it 4 months after, but really...a year? That should be well past the time of "angry early adopter".

Although really if you are irrevocably upset about this then now would be the time to sell your HD and get out of the ecosystem.

thank you for your logical voice of reason. People are a little ridiculous about this whole HD2 thing.

NO!! By left in the cold i meant that if Microsoft bring software updates to the HD2 that isn't made available to the HD then i'll be furious. Like say if the new player had been granted Smart DJ and the original owners weren't given that. It's things like this that made me leave apple's eco-system, and i'll leave this one too if they become the same.

If they fix the Zune HD's flaws - add a few buttons and increase the capacity - I'll buy it no questions asked. I'm very happy with Zune overall, but I would **** Steve Balmer's **** for a Zune HD with a couple of extra buttons for playback control.

And FFS, Microsoft, let me buy music and video from Australia without having to jump through hoops...and get rid of the Microsoft points system while you're at it.
