Discussion about
WWDC thoughts?
What'd you think of WWDC? I don't (just) mean my live keynote coverage, of course.
iPhone OS 3.0 sounds pretty exciting and I can't wait to get my hands on it this coming Wednesday.
But the keynote itself went on way too long with product demos.
The Apple Design Awards are always great, and the iPhone Developer Showcase had some real talent too. It will be interesting to watch this mobile platform continues to mature.

Though keep in mind they also told everyone what the "premium" version of their phone costs: $199. The "king of all smartphones" is the iPhone 3GS -- the 3G is now the starter model. Basically, it still makes the pricing of like-minded smartphones seem relevant. If you want the top-tier model, you've gotta pay for it. I'd like to see the numbers of current sales of the 3G versus 3GS.
True, but what a starter model! How do you sell a $149 touchscreen featurephone when the iPhone 3G is $99? How do you sell a plain vanilla WinMo smartphone for $199 when the iPhone 3G is $99? Yes, you can position a premium device up against the iPhone 3G S, but you're almost forced to tier your product line to meet expectations set by Apple's pricing, and that starts at the $99 level. Apple remains in full control of the subsidized smartphone pricing landscape, and that can't feel good for its competitors.
The stats on 3G Vs. 3GS sales is the thing I am most interested to see about this release. I mean, I get the reality-distortion-field, but seriously? I just can't see how this minor update could generate such a large interest from the masses - the biggest difference seems to be the processor, and average consumers wont really understand people talking about that.
I feel like there would just be a lot of people going into the store looking to get a plan with a free or cheap phone, and walk out with an iPhone 3G. It seems like $99 is just getting really close to the "free" concept, and I wonder if that is really what is pushing sales numbers for this release.
Also, cool to see you over here Josh :)

I enjoyed WWDC but one thing i have had a problem is their laptops.
I like the designs but i don't LOVE them. I still have my previous gen Macbook Pro (Which is still plenty fast btw) and i LOVE this design. It really presents itself as something professional. I'll probably hold onto my curent pro until another redesign happens, and with the way apple works i'll say by next year lol.

I am loving my 3GS and I can't wait for Snow Leopard. That should really get my Mac screaming!
As for the rest of Apple's announcements, I didn't care. There really isn't anything I could see myself buying from them in the next few years. Maybe an AppleTV upgrade would entice me but that is for later days.

I must admit, I do like 3.0.
I've recently downloaded 3.1 BETA (I'm a registered developer) and it seems to show that apps are now opening a lot quicker and the phone itself is booting faster too.
anyway, back on topic. The iPhone 3GS is nice. I was kinda hoping for a 'textured' feel other than the glossy plastic again (like the rumours were about) but alas, no such thing.
As usual, I think the demo's were too long-winded.
Still annoyed by the price of the iPhone 3GS in the UK. I've never known a company like Apple rip us off so much.

While that might be true, the prices of the Apple products over here are about double that of the prices in America
For the most part I liked the sessions I attended, however there is one gripe.
On the last day they had a session on submitting apps to the App Store in which they gave absolutely no insight into their app approval process, nor they did take any questions from the audience with regards to the App Store.
One year in to the App Store there remains very little known about how apps are and are not rejected and Apple seems completely content to keep things that way.

I love my 3G S, the speed is amazing compared to the 3g so apple wasn't exaggerating that. i tested the 3g and 3gs loading up Peggle (excellent game btw) and i was able to start a game while the 3g was still loading. Apple cant have a blockbuster WWDC every year but this years was pretty good. Only disappointment was At&t not being prepared for the launch of the 3.0. I was so ready to start sending MMS since some people i know cant receive email. Heres to 3.1 to bring us MMS officially.
From a business perspective, the $99 iPhone and reduced laptop prices are hit. Apple will certainly keep or gain market share.
The 3.0 iPhone firmware is nice but behind the times considering cut/paste has been around since Bush Senior. Still, leave it to Apple to make it look and sound slick!
The 3GS hardware is incremental but not revolutionary. Still, in your hands it feels very fast and responsive. Love video recording quality and ease of editing. Love, Love, Loving it. Sadly, the love ended once I had to leave the store since I am still within my "'AT damned T' 2-yr contract. My technolust still doesn't outweigh the capacity of my wallet. "It will be mine some day....Oh yes, It will be!" Lack of tethering at launch, lack of MMS at launch and you have a scrubbed launch in my mind. AT&T has got to go!
