Windows Media Center required?
So I borrowed one of these from a guy at work a while back and couldn't get this to work on my network. I would get brief glimpses of my network, but was never able to play video from my Windows XP Pro machine upstairs. Any ideas?
This system sees everything on the network - PC's, Laptops, Network-Attached-Storage (NAS), whatever you have. You definitely DO NOT need Windows Media Center! Make sure your computers are set up on your network and have file sharing on and you have the media folders shared. Then check your router/switch setup and the cabling. Maybe you have a firewall/routing problem. This thing see's a million things on my network and plays everything without any problems - since the day I got it......
Easiest way to get network media to stream is to download and use the myHome DNLA server program, which is officially supported by Popcorn Hour.

If you are attempting to access media stored on a network share (like your PC) make sure the folder(s) are shared properly. I found this page on the Popcorn Hour wiki very helpful:
