Will Nokia offer Symbian^2?

I've read that the N97 hardware is Symbian^2 capable, but frankly Nokia has a crap history of never releasing a full OS upgrade for a handset (updates, yes, but nothing like 3rd Edition to 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1) and breaking app compatibility when these new releases occur.

However, if they've learned their lesson about needing to create platforms with their individual devices, and not simply selling units, then this would be the way to do it. And it would certainly show users why the N97 was actually worth all the marketing buzz.

Still, given the hardware in the phone, I'd be weary about such an upgrade. I can't imagine the phone performance would be *better* afterwards.

It will be possible one way or another, but a Nokia approach is unlikely. End-users will probably have to resort to using a flasher to flash the new OS onto the phone.

Personally I think what Nokia should do is that they should allow us to install everything on the mass memory. As far as I know, stuff like OVI contacts and MfE have to be installed on the phone memory which is killing my N97's performance.

Once they do that I think the performance of the N97 should be much better with the increased space. This in turn would also put Nokia in a better position to upgrade the OS to Symbian^2 as they will can worry less about space constraints.

the symbian^2 that we're speaking of is a package that is released to the manufacturers and then the manufactureres will then choose to add whatever features from this package to their current or future devices. Thats my understanding at least.
From what I've heard from various sources and indeed from developers on the symbian forums is the the V20 upgrade that the n97 received contained a fair number of the features that are part of symbian^2 including the kinetic scrolling that many seem to have been happy about.
Just because it wasnt announced as having symbian^2 doesnt mean that the features arent there.
Frankly though my understanding is that symbian^2 is more of an incremental upgrade as opposed to the changes we will see in symbian^3 and symbian^4 releases.
