Why did you choose this camera?

I'm shopping for an ultra-compact like this one and I think I am down to deciding between this and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5. What were the choices that you guys were weighing when you bought this and what was the tipping point that made you choose this camera?

Really simple. It has a viewfinder.

I'm getting really annoyed at how hard it is now to find a compact camera with a viewfinder. I had a Canon PowerShot S40 before a Nikon 200S which I wasn't at all happy with because it didn't have a viewfinder (try using an LCD in bright sunlight) so decided to return to a Canon.

I too bought this for its thin, compact design. The video recording in 720p looks great as well.

Haven't got it yet but am about to grab one for the underwater enclosure which Canon also sells, the WP-DC31. The IXUS series are a great way to get a fairly cheap good quality underwater camera.

Well, I love Canon for one. And at the time of this writing, this is the smallest camera Canon makes. It's awesomely powerful for it's size, at least compared to my last Canon (PowerShot A540).

Actually my only complaint is that the model I own is black and the paint work has scratched, revealing the silver lining underneath, how should I attempt to repair this?

I was in the market for a new camera since a friend accidentally broke my previous one (Canon IXUS 950 IS), what appealed to me most about this particular model was the tiny form factor and the option for shooting High Definition footage.

I just got this model when they had the new 120is in stock, bit for the price £180, its a no brainer. I downgraded from an LX3 which i never used and found too fiddly. I have it in my pocket at the moment and can barely feel it. The menu system is intuitive, video and still IQ for its size is great.

Build quality wise it has a nice heft, and thats what won me over, even without switching it on, it just felt right in the hand.

The best camera is the one you have with you.

I ended up going with the SD780, I really like it so far but haven't had a chance to play with it outside yet.

Yeah, I kicked around the idea of which one to buy -- this or the Canon SD1100IS being the two primary contenders.

In the long run I decided to order the SD780 because of the 720p video and the form factor on top of, of course, all the reviews I could find on the web which were for the most part positive.

That being said, it will be arriving later today courtesy of Newegg!

I needed to replace my extremely old, yet still superb Canon PowerShot SD400 (5MP, 4 years old). The SD400 is still a great camera and takes really good outdoor shots (without as much oversaturation as Canon's newer IXUS cameras). But the indoor shots are really bad in low light, flash is terrible, and it's a bit slow, also the autofocus is nothing compared to what they can do now.

So I was already really familiar with the UI, and love the form factor. In fact, I think that until the SD780, Canon never made another one quite as small and thin as the SD400. The SD780 is a few mm thinner yet, and is also more rounded off on the edges, so it feels much smaller. I am the type who needs a camera to fit in my jeans pocket, or I won't bother carrying it (esp with phone cameras getting pretty decent).

I'd say versus the DMC-TZ5, it completely depends on two things - how much you need 10x optical zoom vs 3x, and how much the small size matters.

I would love a better optical zoom, but to me, smaller is more important.

I chose it because I wanted a thin camera, and after about a year of looking around when I was ready to buy, the canon sd1100 which I was originally going to buy went out of stock, but then this camera got released, It really wowed me with its thin body and the HD video and the superb canon os. I was torn between this and the sd1200 and the nikon s60, and I expected me to get the s60 but the os was horrible and slow, and the pictures weren't great, and the sd1200 was pretty ugly, so I got the sd780 and I love this camera! You shculd get it you wont regret it.

The 720p video and the design of this camera is what made me decide on it. I really like it. The pictures it takes are much nicer than those of my former point-and-shoot Sony (especially indoor shots). The video looks great, and the super-small size just make it even better. I think this camera is an excellent choice, although I'm sure the Panasonic would be a great choice, as well!
