Who is the go to company for gaming laptops now-a-days?

I'm currently shopping around for options on a new laptop that may offer some type of gaming ability. I'm not looking for anything heavy duty like Crysis but I'd like to be able to use Steam & Starcraft 2. I know at one point Alienware was the go to company but I recall reading that they weren't as reliable as they once were; which would be a bummer because you can get i5's & i7's from the dell outlet for under 1K (so one as low as $750). I was considering a Mac as well but I'm weary of their video cards over the long run. I also know the new HP Envy's are solid machines but if the touchpad is anything like the TM2 I want nothing do with it.

I'd build a desktop rig but the fact of the matter is I just don't sit at a desk anymore when I'm home doing things. I'm more often than not sitting on my couch or at my dining room table whenever I need to do any type of computing. So while I may be able to build something really powerful for the same money, I just wont find myself sitting at a desk very often.

Anyone have any input on this? Ideally looking for something that is at least i5 and 512MB dedicated video, prefer to go for the 1GB though.

It depends on whether you want to carry it around, whether it's going to be your main laptop, etc. As an all-round gamer, the Asus G73 seems to offer pretty stonking value - but it is a ~4Kg relative behemoth. Mind you, the supposedly smaller M15x for example qualifies as anyone else's heavy-duty 17-incher in terms of bulk and weight (which is in fact heavier than the G73).

I completely overlooked weight, thanks for bringing that up. I didn't realize alienware's were so heavy and that will definitely be an issue.

You didn't quite answer the question.

Sorry about that. I'm looking for it to be my main laptop. I wont be carrying it often but I'd still like to find something in the 3.5-5lb range so that it's not too terrible.

If you haven't already got a laptop take a look at the hp dm4t. Its pretty light (4.4 lb) with a 14.1" screen. Not that expensive either (base config $730 @ i5 430m, no dedicated graphics, 3 gb RAM 500 gb hdd). you can configure it up to i7-640, 1 gb ATI 5470 switchable graphics, 8gb RAM, 640 hdd or 128 SSD etc. The battery life is pretty good for the size (it says 6.5 hours on standars, 10.5 hours on extended battery)

Alienware and ORIGIN PC for raw power
iBuypower and CyberPowerPC for customizability
Asus seems pretty good with their ROG series
Envies are more like Macbook Pros - not really intended for gaming just premium laptops

Eurocom also makes some of the most badass computers just look at the Panther 2.0

thanks for pointing out ibuypower and cyberpowerpc! The prices aren't that bad for what you're getting.

that's true and i believe their warranty is pretty long too. Not too sure about their quality because people don't really review iBuypowers or CyberpowerPC's as much as they review, say, MacBooks haha. Might want to do some research before making your purchase! :)
