When using the iPhone Remote app to control Apple TV, there's a small "Option" button on the lower left corner in the Remote app screen.

I've tried to tap on it in many occasions, and it didn't seem to do anything other than causing the iPhone screen to "flash" a bit. Any tips?

If you're referring to the button in the lower left corner of the "control" screen, it's for additional options similar to holding down the center button on the physical remote. For example, this would bring up features such as genius playlist when playing music.

If you are unable to get this functionality to work on your remote app, I would recommend deleting the app and reinstalling it.
